An upsetting day in our little Oasis..

May 25th, 2011, 02:25 PM
A bad day period!!
First thing I saw when I woke up,a large dead Possum right in front of our house:(it was a male,so no babies in the pouch.

Next,I think I told you the empty house next door have raccoons in the roof..
well, the new owner is replacing the roof.
He knows there are Raccoons,I told him,but hestill decided to just put the new roof on.
This morning,a baby tried desperatly to get in,but they shooed him away and he is now in my hedge.
I called the Oakville Humane Society,a young man, whom I know from before came,he picked up the Possum, then he checked out the baby and decided to leave it in case mom comes for him,if he's still there tomorrow he'll pick it up.

He talked to the people, told them it's animal cruelty if they block the way out for the Raccoons,so they checked the attic and said there was no Raccoons there,I hope they are right, but I have a feeling they did not check good enough, the one guy who checked,is terrified of coons.
We'll see...tomorrow.

May 25th, 2011, 03:34 PM
Oh Chico, that's so frustrating...poor possum...and poor baby coon! Hopefully momma comes for him and has found a new home!:goodvibes:

May 25th, 2011, 03:41 PM
how young is the baby Chico? if old enough to eat, maybe you could put something out for it? dry dog food? cat kibble? and a dish of water

May 25th, 2011, 03:42 PM
krd,I feel really down, now it's raining and cool, that little guy is still hiding in the hedge, the roof is done.
I :pray:there are no more babies in there, omg,I wish I did not care, like so many other people..

May 25th, 2011, 03:45 PM
oh and if the mom wants in bad enough chico, she can do considerable damage getting back in . we had one next door chew through the soffet (sp?) and paneling to get into the roof

May 25th, 2011, 03:48 PM
I hope so Melinda:pray:but this baby is still on the outside,terrified..:(

May 25th, 2011, 03:58 PM
can you snuggle a sideways box of some kind into your hedges?? possibly with a flannel rag? something he won't get his nails caught in?

May 25th, 2011, 04:35 PM
Melinda,I am going out to see if he's still in the hedge.
He's still there,I gave him some of Baileys kibble and some water.
Showed it to him, hopefully he'll eat..
If he's still there tomorrow HS will pick him up,our HS is wonderful..

May 25th, 2011, 06:48 PM
Do you think he's too little to survive on his own, chico? :( I hope his mom comes back for him! Maybe she's just laying low till it gets dark :fingerscr

May 25th, 2011, 07:31 PM
Oh Chico, I am so sorry you have to go through this.

But better you than someone who does not care. At least the little darling has a guardian angel looking out for him

 Momma comes tonight.

May 26th, 2011, 07:48 AM
We had a really bad thunder-storm last night,I thought about that little guy out there alone.:(
The young man from HS,estimated the little one probably needs another month to be selfsufficient.
There are signs that a Raccoon was here last night,I am hoping it was mom:pray:
I will go out and look for him,if he's still there I'll call HS....I'll let you know..

May 26th, 2011, 07:50 AM
*fingers crossed mom came to claim him*

May 26th, 2011, 08:56 AM
Hope things are okay, Chico.

May 26th, 2011, 09:07 AM
I hope she came for him! :fingerscr

I thought of him last night. There was a huge raccoon cleaning up under the platform feeders--I think she's got kits somewhere nearby, too, so I let her finish up before bringing in the feeders.

May 26th, 2011, 09:36 AM
Well,he is still in the same spot:(HS is coming to pick him up..:(

May 26th, 2011, 09:42 AM
Thank goodness for the HS.

But it makes you wonder where the mom is. I would have thought she would have come for him if she could.

May 26th, 2011, 09:55 AM
poor little thing, will they take him to a wildlife sanctuary?

May 26th, 2011, 10:13 AM
I am still waiting for them, but I have a feeling the mom and the rest of the babies are trapped,I am going to ask HS to check thorougly from the Attic..they've(not the babies) been there since last fall,so I am sure they are
hunkered down securily.

May 26th, 2011, 10:20 AM
Poor little guy. :( Can the HS check the attic without the owner's permission?

May 26th, 2011, 11:27 AM
No they can't Hazel, but the owner and the roofers are here,I am still waiting,I hate to wait:shrug:
Our OHS has a huge area to take care of...hopefully he'll be here soon...Bailey willbe waiting for us..

May 26th, 2011, 12:45 PM
Maybe I misunderstood but are you staying there is a possibility the roofers sealed racoons IN the attic? Are they crazy? Racoons, even one, can wreck their attic. If one dies in there it will STINK in the heat.

OK, it's sad, but not everyone gives two hoots for animals. Don't they care about the house though? Could you present that to them as an argument? Surely if they are only guys doing a job for someone else it is still incumbent on them to make sure the attic is clear.

Gosh, I'd think if a family of racoons has been there for some time the place would smell from faeces and urine already. Sure did in a family member's house. Urine was staining the ceiling.

May 26th, 2011, 01:49 PM
had to check and see what was up.... was thinking about the little guy last night too chico, had bad storms here too. Hopefully the owners let the HS guy get up there to look properly, I'd just hate to think of a whole family trapped up there! I'll check back after work to see how you made out today!:goodvibes::grouphug:

May 26th, 2011, 01:56 PM
I am still waiting, the little guy has been without any food for more than 30 hours,I think hubs and I will try to get him down ourselves, put him in a cat-carrier,give him some bread soaked in milk, until HS gets here.
I am really upset over this whole situation,I broke down in tears...:(

May 26th, 2011, 03:21 PM
not milk chico, if anything, try feeding him he young enough to still be suckling from his mom?

In an emergency, a homemade solution can be made by mixing: teaspoon salt + tablespoon of sugar + 2 cups of water – warm slightly to dissolve sugar and salt. better if the water was boiled first

May 26th, 2011, 03:30 PM
Melinda,I did not need too, right after I was on here,HS came.
The little guy put up a real fight,he looked to be maybe 2 months old.

This was not the same young man as yesterday, this one would not even talk to my neighbor about the possibility there might be a whole family in the roof.
I think it's a surety there are more where this baby came from, but I suppose that is up to the owner to call Wild-Life services,I'll keep an eye on things.

I talked to the owner and he'll be here late tonight to listen for noises, then will see what happens, hopefully the mom will be able to dig herself through again:pray:
At least this baby is safe,HS does not kill them, they go to a wildlife sanctuary.

May 26th, 2011, 03:40 PM
chico, at two months it is possible the mother was in the process of moving them further out, (because of the construction of the new roof), this baby might have been the last to be moved, like squirrels they move them in a two step deal, first step is to take each one down seperately and "stash" them in a bush etc, when all are in the pile, she then again, takes one at a time to where ever it is she chose for her new "home", he might have been the last and because of the noise she didn't return.

May 26th, 2011, 04:21 PM
Melinda,I hope so,I cannot bare the thought of them dying in there:(

May 26th, 2011, 05:08 PM
Chico the other thing and I know we dont like to think about it but maybe mom was moving them and she didnt make it back for the little least he is safe now! Thank you so much for your never ending love and concern for these babies and others!!! :thumbs up

May 26th, 2011, 09:24 PM
chico, that is so sad...I hope they are all out of the attic. :grouphug:

May 26th, 2011, 09:30 PM
I sure hope this has a happy ending Chico2.

Is the owner at least being co-operative? Is he still staying late tonight?

May 27th, 2011, 07:44 AM
:( I was glad the little one was "safe",but had I waited another another 5 hours,he would have been safer:(

I was watching TV around 8pm when I heard a loud clang, sounded like a ladder falling down..
The mom Raccoon must have been working all day on getting through to the soffit(SP?)and getting it to fall down,it is all down on the side of the house.
They must all have fallen down to the ground, but they were all ok.

Some of the babies were going up on the roof trying to get back in,the mother and 3 babies climbed up our tree, the 2 babies on the roof, crying their little lungs out trying to get back down.

By now the old man,his sons and friends are here watching and laughing.
I just asked them to leave the babies on the roof alone, mom will get them down after dark.

So,I should feel satisfaction knowing I was right, mom was in the roof,as I thought, but knowing I had a baby removed from it's family, just makes me angry with myself....I should just stop interfering, sorry baby-coon:(

May 27th, 2011, 07:57 AM
no chico, you did right, by now mom has forgotten there was another baby and baby is curled up with other orphaned coons and will live a long healthy life once released in a safe spot. each rescue has their own safe spot for releases, you dont know if another critter would have taken the kit, if it would have wandered out to the street and been hit etc. you did the best thing for that kit, you gave it a life! we need more people like you in this world to care for our wildlife.

May 27th, 2011, 08:23 AM
It might have gotten too weak from not eating to recover if you'd waited longer, chico! So don't second-guess yourself! As Melinda says, the little one is now safe, has company, warmth and food and will live a long healthy life in the wild once it's released. You did good, chico :grouphug:

:thumbs up ditto chico, you did the right thing....and I'm sure the little one is all snuggly with others just like him!

May 27th, 2011, 03:58 PM
Humane Society called and asked if they could bring the baby back tonight,in the hopes the mom will come back here and they'll be reunited.

I am going to throw out some peanuts and bread,if the mom and her 5 babies come, maybe they'll stay long enough to notice the lost baby.

HS said he is in great shape, but if he's still here in the morning, they'll take him to a sanctuary.

Those stupid neighbors thought she broke down the soffit trying to get IN,while in her desperation she tried to get OUT,not in..if they had checked properly for her, before closing up the roof, this would not have happened.
Thank's everyone for your encouragement:grouphug:

May 27th, 2011, 04:04 PM
it just might be possible that the mom will be back chico, good luck to the kit, please let us know what happens!!:grouphug:

May 27th, 2011, 04:14 PM
I sure will Melinda, you guys are my outlet, other people don't really understand why I care about"pests"(not my word for them).

May 27th, 2011, 05:54 PM
oh beleive me, I understand.....completely, I've spent many nights sitting up watching over some "pest" to see if mom will return

May 28th, 2011, 12:22 PM
HS got here last night at 10,she released the little one,he quickly disappeared in my flowers.
I had left food out to attract the mother and her other 5 babies and it was gone this morning, the way the peanut-shells were,is telling me it was Raccoons.
HS called me this morning and I and hubs had already looked everywhere,in every bush,up every tree and he's not here, hopefully that means he's joined his family:pray:
However,we will continue looking, mom will more than likely be back tonight(I am not leaving food out though)and hopefully I'll be able to count the babies.
The girl at HS,has been great...
My neighbors are not too happy with me though, not that I care, they don't even live here.
I told them not to close off the roof until they were out,but they did now the soffit needs to be repaired mayorly.

May 28th, 2011, 01:19 PM
I can easily see why this got you so upset Chico2 and what an :angel2: you are for helping so actively.

:goodvibes: :goodvibes: :goodvibes: :goodvibes: to you and :fingerscr :pray:that all the coons are okay.

May 28th, 2011, 02:31 PM
Sounds like a success story, chico! :goodvibes: I hope you're able to count babies tonight to totally set your mind at ease! :grouphug:

The damage to the house serves your neighbor right for having the family closed up in there in the first place. :frustrated: Is the HS going to cite them for cruelty for having blocked the raccoons in there in the first place? :fingerscr

May 28th, 2011, 04:35 PM
Hazel,no they are not, since the mom was strong enough to push down the wooden over hang and the metal Soffit(I think that's what it's called)they'll be paying enough to have that fixed.

Marko,if I know of ANY animal in trouble, there is no way I would not interfere, but the "angel"part, some people might disagree:laughing:

May 28th, 2011, 06:10 PM
hats off to you chico, I imagine she came for the little one, what a great person you are, I love endings like this.

May 29th, 2011, 04:22 AM
:grouphug::goodvibes: see that crappy day turned into a great story! bet the little guy is back with the family and tellin them all about his crazy adventure!;)

May 29th, 2011, 09:20 AM
I wish I could know if he was safe:(he is not around here, for sure..
The girl at HS,told me,a baby-coon will usually stay in a familiar spot, will not generally wonder off on his own,I hope she's right.
So maybe this is a happy ending,I'd like to think so:thumbs up

May 29th, 2011, 11:33 AM
That's the problem with good endings with wildlife. You never really know for sure unless you see the family actually reunite--and that makes it hard. :2huggers: But chances are this little one's mom came back looking for him and he's back with his family now! So I think that's the end of the tale we should go with! :D

May 29th, 2011, 12:14 PM
she is right chico, if they are starving or very very thirsty , only then will they leave their "safe" spot to seek out humans

May 29th, 2011, 03:57 PM
I checked again, even in the neighbors yard and he's nowhere to be seen,I am 99% sure his mom came to get him:pray:
