My 10 month old cat often meows loudly for a good minute or two before he has to go poop. When this happens, the poop is runny and light brown, and the smell is terrible... it fills our apartment. Other than this he is a very happy and active cat who has no problems eating. I feel so bad for him and I am wondering if he should see a vet? We feed him IAMs both dry and wet food and have not recently changed his diet or anything.

When was your cat last dewormed? It may be a good idea to take him and a fecal sample to your vet to have it checked. If you have a good relationship with your vet he may take a fecal without you having to take the kitty in for a checkup.
Have there been any other changes in his diet? IE: letting him drink cows milk, plants he may have munched on that may be poisonous, anything unusual.
Please DO consider changing his diet. The runs may be diet related. There are much better quality canned foods out there. You could even consider feeding raw which is the best you can do for your cat's health. Drop the dry food all together. Especially when you have a male cat. Cats need their fluids with their foods. Not beside it. I will give you a great website to check out. The information included in it is priceless. www.catinfo.org
Good luck with your kitty. Let us know how he is doing.

Thanks for your help!
We got him from the humane society last December and he was dewormed prior to that, but I think I will take a sample to the vet as soon as possible as he has had no diet changes and he is strictly an indoor cat.
Thank you for all the information :)

Sounds like he may have some sort of intestinal parasite like Coccidia or Giardia---both these make foul-smelling poos. When you take him in to vet to be checked out bring a fresh stool sample with you for the vet to test. Hope you soon are able to find out what the problem is.
