Fixing a birdhouse...

April 2nd, 2011, 11:08 PM
You see how phobic I am about birds <????!!!! > ~ it took me forever just to FIND this forum.

I've been given a lovely, but broken, birdfeeder which I would like to fix. Not sure if I have the nerve to use it myself but, at the very least I hope I can put it back to rights and gift it to someone else.

It's a "cedar-shake" style with shingles of what I assume to be balsa affixed to what appears to be rotting cork. I think it still has alot of life left in it and I've hand-cut pieces of shim to replace missing shingles. But I'm wondering what ~ non-toxic-to-birds ~ product to use to glue the pieces of shingle which have fallen off to the rotting cork.

I know I should probably find someway of carefully removing all the staples from the five gerzillion shingles and replace all the cork discs but....holy fiddley-bits.

Any simple fixes out there birders?

one word, glue gun....I use teeny nails when I build my bird houses/feeders and I'm famous with my glue gun, the first one I did is still in the tree beside me, a little rough for wear and the paint is all off of it, but birds have been nesting in it (and the 12 others) for going on 22 yrs.

I was worried about toxins in glue Melinda. I don't know enough about birds physiology and their sensitivities. But, if you say glue sticks are okay :thumbs up then I'll go ahead and...burn the heck out of my thumbs and fingers! :D

<---- I'm *craft-challenged*

*L* I'll see what I can do, I'll do some of my "built for me" ones tomorrow and work my way around the yard, some grrrrrrrrrrrrrr were destroyed by the workers in the field beside me (put them in tree's that were beside our property line)
