Infection spreading

March 27th, 2011, 04:46 PM

Seems my 15 year old female cat has ingrown/infected front paws.

On both legs, the middle nail seems to be infected.

The vet clipped them, then on Thursday gave an antibiotic needle.

Cat is still weak, nail area smells of infection still.

Soaking in salt water and putting peroxide on both nails often.

Any ideas to help kitty can back on her feet?

Edit* = I just went to clean the paws again and notice the back paw now is infected too, looks like there's a wound right where the nail begins.
I'm thinking this is more serious that ingrown nails at this point.

Thank you

Did the vet say what kind of infection it was, did he/she do a scraping?

Hi Fred,
Seems unlikely to me a bacterial infection would spread among 3 paws, without something else going on. Did your vet do any bloodwork to check for immune problems, leukemia, or anything like that?

Turns out the third paw just had blood on it.

The vet is a bit of a hippie and insisted that if she was still eating, to let it run its course.

I'm insisting on blood work this time...

I would try soaking her infected paws in warm water with some epsom salt about 1 tbsp to a litre of water... the stuff is draws infection out of the vet recommended it along with antibiotics , after a nasty experience with spear can find it at any drug store..

Ya, we've been doing that, it does draw out the infection :)

I'm just hoping its not something more serious...
