Eyelid surgery to remove tumor?

February 7th, 2011, 11:40 AM

My 9-year-old black Lab has a small growth on her eyelid that is starting to cause some irritation and discharge coming from the eye. On the advice of a neighbour whose dog has had a lot of eye problems I took her to an eye specialist here in Toronto, who said it is a tumorous growth called an Adenoma that is almost always benign.

It is so small that I didn't think removing it would be a costly procedure, but the estimate is $1200 to $1500 plus the $200 I've already paid for the consult.

I'm just curious if anybody else here has a dog that has had a similar procedure and if that cost seems reasonable?

Thanks very much.

Hello. My chocolate Lab was around 7-8 years old when she developed a small tumor on her upper eye lid. It was beginning to irritate her eye, so we went to our regular vet first (in western Quebec), and the vet said she could take it off easily along with a small bump on her nose bridge.
My cost was $150. and I did have a "good client" discount.
I guess the regular charge would have been about $180. plus the $35 exam.

Since this is not actual eyeball surgery or eye disease, etc. you can probably have a regular vet take it off, it is not a big deal.
Eye specialists in Montreal are very expensive too, but are great for glaucoma etc.
Good Luck.

Wow, that sounds incredibly cheap. My consult was $140 plus $60 for the ocular anaesthetic and corneal stain required for the diagnosis. I wonder if we're talking about the same type of surgery. The procedure recommended for my Lab involves general anaesthesia and the removal of a pie shaped piece of the eyelid large enough to ensure that the tumour is removed completely.

My dog had ACL surgery last year, which also involved general anaesthesia. The total cost was more than $1700, but the ACL repair was only $700 of that. The other $1000+ was for the anestheia, intravenous fluids, blood work, hospitalization, meds, etc.

So I guess I shouldn't be that surprised that this procedure is $1200 to $1500.

Yes, it was a good price....but then again, I have been going to the same vet clinic for over 25 years.
The operation was done in 2001 and clearly involved only the eyelid so no specialist needed. She had a couple of stitches too.
Doggie did have a general anesthetic and came home very groggy even though it was supposed to be a small dose.
That same vet will do leg surgeries also which run into the $1,000. plus range.
