CBC News
A German shepherd attacked three people outside a convenience store in separate incidents just minutes apart, and now police are searching for the animal's owner.

The attacks occurred around 8:40 a.m. ET Wednesday outside the store on Glen Shields Avenue near Dufferin Street and Steeles Avenue West.

An unidentified man walked into the store, leaving the dog untied outside, York Regional Police said in a release.

The dog, described as black and tan and weighing about 100 pounds, attacked a 16-year-old girl who was walking near the store, police said. She sustained shoulder injuries.

Minutes later, the dog attacked a 66-year-old man in the "neck and arm area" as he tried to enter the store, and he required more than 20 stitches, police said.

Less than five minutes later, the dog attacked a woman who tried to enter the store, although she wasn't injured, police said.

The man left the area shortly after the third attack.

Police are asking the public for their help in identifying the man, described as:

Hispanic with tan skin and a medium build.
About 170 pounds and five-foot-seven.
Wearing a dark jacket and dark tuque.
Police are also warning the public to be cautious when approaching dogs on the loose.

"If possible, avoid the area where the dog is or try to keep a barrier between you and the dog like a vehicle, fence, door or clothing.

"Avoid looking the dog right in the eyes and avoid running away. You are better to stay still and try to back away slowly. Call animal control in your area as soon as possible. "

Another story of an irresponsible owner and a dog which will no doubt be killed because of it.

With all the media coverage over the past few years, you realize there are so many numbskulls who choose to ignore the basics of being a responsible dog owner...and this is pretty darn basic.

This is 15min walking distance from my home, i hope people dont give me the 'look' when we walk jermy. We have soooo many gsds in the area (its a popular breed in the russian circles), but i never see any off leash, this owner is so stupid, why would you leave your dog outside to roam..... :wall:

With an owner like that no dog has a chance, sad.....

Sadly Masha - you will probably have 'those' eyes in your direction due to this incident.

Toronto police have seized a dog believed responsible for attacks on three people at a Vaughan convenience store Wednesday.

The German shepherd, an eight-year-old female weighing 90 pounds, was picked up Thursday morning in North York after police received an anonymous tip, according to York police Det. Const. Alex Samitz.

The dog, which goes by the name of Krysia, was taken by animal control officers and placed in quarantine.

“We have to notify the health department but we’re told the dog had its shots in November,” Samitz said.

The owner of the dog was apparently visiting relatives in Vaughan when he stopped by the convenience store.

His name was not immediately released, and there was no immediate word on whether he faces any charges.

The attacks left a 66-year-old man with wounds to his face and arm and also sent a 16-year-old woman to hospital with a shoulder injury.

Tony Palazzolo was attacked as he left the Vaughan convenience store, where he buys a newspaper every day.

As he left the store, a German shepherd at the entrance outside lunged at Palazzolo, biting him on the face.

Palazzolo, who stands only 5-foot-3 and weighs 120 pounds, put up his left arm to protect himself.

“Thank God I put my arm up,” he said Thursday morning while recovering at his home, where he and his wife, Josie, have lived for 20 years.

Although Palazzolo was wearing a winter coat and a sweater, the dog chewed through to his arm, shredding his flesh almost to the bone.

He cried out and stumbled back into the store, where he discovered that the dog owner was still inside.

“I went to the owner,” Palazzolo recalled. “He looked at me, and took the dog and ran.”

A woman in the store came to Palazzolo’s assistance and drove him to his nearby home, where his wife took him to hospital.

Josie, 56, said she drove looking straight ahead. She couldn’t bear to look at her husband, whose mouth was bleeding so badly he could barely talk.

When he got to hospital, Palazzolo received three stitches to the mouth and another 19 to his left arm, which took the brunt of the attack

In the waiting room of the hospital, Josie says she heard another young woman discussing a dog attack.

“I kept hearing, ‘dog, dog’ and I said, what happened? And they told me and I said, ‘Oh my God, it’s the same dog.’”

York Regional Police say that the same dog attacked three people at the same convenience store within a matter of minutes.

Investigators have taken surveillance video from the store owner to see if this will help them identify the dog owner and the dog.

Police say that the incident began at about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, when a man standing about 5-foot-7 and wearing a dark jacket and dark toque entered the convenience store on Glen Shields Ave., leaving the 100-pound dog untied outside.

The dog first bit a 16-year-old female passerby on the shoulder, then turned on Palazzolo.

The dog also lunged at a 41-year-old woman as she tried to go into the store. She was able to get away and was not hurt.

Palazzolo could barely talk Thursday morning, his face swollen.

“I don’t blame the dog. I blame the owner,” he said. “It attacked three people. It should have been on a leash.”

Meanwhile his wife was preparing to take him to a clinic for rabies shots.

“I have to take care of my husband,” she said. “That’s the most important thing right now.”

She wonders about what kind of dog owner would run away like this.

“He didn’t care what the dog did to my husband,” she said.

These are the owners who need to be charged but the dog will pay the ultimate price for the owners ignorance. I hope they throw the book at this guy.

It is truly sickening to hear stories such as this one. I hope that owner gets charged otherwise it will only be the dog who is the loser in the end.

Its time that bad pet owners are put in their place. There is no need for incidenses such as this one to occur, especially since it is so easily preventable.

an eight year old shephard.... i wonder why all of a sudden an 8 year old dog would flip out like that... i have a feeling there is more to this story. The dog is probably russian owned, krysa is a russian word.

SO sad if they`ll put Krysya down... She was just working, as her damn owner taught her to.. Where is she now? Is there gonna be any kind of investigation or they'll just kill her?? I wish I could do something..:cry::cry:

well well well, does anyone know what ended up happening to the dog? I wish your mom well Daniel and glad she wasn't injured also. I also wish the owner would have been charged.

thank you melinda very much the owner was not criminanly charged and the charge that he did get was equivalent to a traffic tiket and thats what upset me i found that out today melinda and i found out that the dog was put to sleep at the owners request and what is a shock to me is that it was at his request and if he didint request it what would have happend who nos they mite have given the dog back and let him go because he got a slap on the rist for what he did

I believe that when they say 'at the owners request' what it often means is that the owner is given a choice... either choose to put the dog down or face legal consequences.... i guess its easier to chose to put the dog down.

Daniel, every one's heart here goes out to the people affected -- this should never have happened. Bu tplease to keep in mind, that it is not the dog's fault -- the dog did what it was bred and taught to do - she guarded the entrance where her owner was. It is the owner that should be charged for letting the dog roam free. I am appaled that the owner was not charged... but i am sure there will be a civil suit following.

I hope your mom comes to trust dogs again and more importantly.. dog owners...

I agree, and i wonder why the breed was not mentioned like a hundred times,as a pitbull breed would have been. They first describe it as a black and tan like dog. If there was any little bit of thought that it was a pitbull,it would be a pitbull no questions asked. Yet they didnt say german sheppard, then ended up saying it was later once they actually knew.

i know that pitbulls are unfairly targeted, but any time that an incident like this takes place and the breed is not mentioned out right, its always a good thing.... even if it highlights even more the unfair treatment of pittbulls.

because at the end of the day this has nothing to do with the breed. there is already one breed ban for us to worry and stand against, i would hate to have to deal with even more...

Absolutely ~ we DO NOT want to end up like Italy where anything bigger than a gerbil was banned.
