I have a Belgian malinois who has flea allergies, bad skin and chronic ear infections (poor baby was a special pet in need...) My husband and I recently saw a show on Animal Planet about police (german shepard) dogs that were fed a tablespoon of olive oil over the dog's dry food on a daily basis. They claimed it was good for the coat and skin.
Anyone have any feed back about this?

I've heard that olive oil is fine for dogs, as long as it's extra virgin. I feed my dogs cottage cheese and have seen an improvement in their coats.

i give charlie any oil that is in front of me at the time and have for 8yrs.
it is usually vegetable oil, olive oil or canola oil as i store them close by. i have seen ppl use margarine and butter also, just a tablespoon in the feed, i dont use these as i think it is a bit expensive and wasteful when i can use oil.
i have always given it for coat helath, and i only give it to her once a week as i do with a raw egg, she gets them on different feeds though. but she also has tuna once a week for other tyes of oils and minerals. :D
(but never feed red colored flesh fish, that is tuna and deep sea fish to a dog or human more than once a week as it contains natural heavy metals that are not good for anyone in large amounts, they dont accumulate if take once a week, but can if given more often) :D

My mom always gave her dog oil on his dry food everyday... he had allergies and always had rashes, oil was one of the things that helped his coat and skin to stay healthy.

It can't hurt! I mix olive oil in with Bentley's yogurt for breakfast each morning.

Maybe also check out holistic pet remedies. Do a search online and then research. Message boards are great for this.

If you feed them a food with Omega 3 and 6 in it it will do the same thing as any fish oil or olive oil. You can also get eggs from a health food store that have these ingredients in them. Just feed them a raw egg on their food a couple of times a week. Be careful of the food you choose though as some claim they have that ingredient but have a very small portion. I recommend the brand Medical (only available from your vet) or Nutrience if you want a cheaper version.

I have used olive oil and fish oils they all work great and I usually use a glucosamine supplement for joints but I buy all my supplements at Costco or Walmart pet stores overcharge for the same products. Omega 3 is great all round supplement.

I put oil on both of the dogs food. Charlie gets it because of his constant scratching and dry skin and now Willy gets it because it makes his coat really soft and since Charlie gets it he won't eat his dinner without it!
