Cuddles aka Puddles aka Tiddlebum

Can you tell I haven't decided on a name yet ?

Right now, she's Cuddles because that's all she wants to spend her time doing :cloud9:. Cuddles is an 11 year Shih Tzu who was surrendered to a local shelter...pregnant and due within the next 2 weeks :wall: :(. After speaking with the director of our rescue (I so love that woman!), we brought her home on Sunday but, by Monday morning, I realized she wasn't feeling well. Rushed her to the vet hospital where she had x-rays and ultrasound, and put on IV. Fortunately, she's much better today and if all is ok tomorrow, she'll be returning home. Any signs of distress, or labor, and we'll be heading into the vet hospital immediately.

Please send all your good vibes and prayers her way so that she comes through this safe and sound.

She looks so sweet and hope all goes well with Cuddle Puddle (name?) Are you going to foster her and the pups? Your such an :angel2:

Sending all my :goodvibes::goodvibes::goodvibes: and :pray::pray::pray: your way LP.

We'll be fostering her until she goes into labor. Once the pups are born, if there are any complications, they will all be in more specialized care. If all goes well, then they'll be returning here.

It's the girls at the shelter who sought help for her, and the rescue that are the angels, klm :) . I have the easiest part in all this...I get to love her up silly :cloud9:.

The girls at the shelter and the rescue are :angel2:'s as well. They couldn't have been :angel2:'s if they didn't know an :angel2: :)

Besides which, all the :angel2:'s I know, know how to love it up so you're still an :angel2: :D

Hope all goes well. :fingerscr

All my thoughts and prayers will be with her (and you, of course!!).
I still can't believe someone would purposely (or even accidentally) allow an 11 yr old dog to become pregnant. That poor little thing.

klm is right, you are truly an :angel2:

Holy crap, 11 and pregnant :wall::wall::wall:. What are people thinking :loser:. Well she is in good hands now. :grouphug:

Puddles, hehehehe, love that name. We named Puddles because it looked like she walked in mud puddles due to her pointed colouring.

Oh this poor sweet soul...she is finally being looked after. Hope it is not anything serious and she can come back to your heavenly abode soon :cloud9:

And though I agree about the angels at the shelter who wanted to give her a chance and the rescue angels stepping in also know that the call for a foster was made over a number of days and YOU were the angel with your plate already full who stepped up :angel2::angel2::angel2:

I sincerely hope she and all her pups pull through and go on to lead happy loving lives :goodvibes::goodvibes:

She's so sweet. Praying that she's okay and makes it through this ordeal in good shape. I'd like to get my hands on the neck of the person who allowed this to happen to her and then dumped her! :frustrated: I cannot say what I'd like to say here, but I will say bless you for taking her in and giving her the love she so deserves. I agree with the others, you are an :angel2:

She's home :goodvibes:. What a big difference, she's feeling much, much better :highfive:.

I now have an idea of what it was like for dh to wait on me hand and foot towards the end of my pregnancy :D. The little princess made it clear she much prefers her own bedroom suite (she's taken up residence in my older son's room) and I'm in the process of taking notes on her preferred menu plans . She prefers to eat off a plate and not from a bowl, has rejected all dog food, and has a preference for chicken...warmed up of course. Tomorrow we try ground turkey and sweet potatoes. She refuses tap water but laps up bottled water....slightly warmed as well. The little bugger is going to keep me on my toes, that's for sure .

How far along is she in her pregnancy?

She's due in approximately 9 days.

Just curious - did she not come with a name she is used to?

She doesn't respond to it at all. She's from a home where she lived with 20 other dogs so I don't imagine she was taught her name.

L4H, if all goes well, yes, we will foster Cuddles and her pups.

Hazel, my kitchen looks like a I cooked a 6 course meal for a dozen people. And you know what she ended up eating this evening? 2 teaspoons of green tripe, 2 slices of ham, and 1/4 slice fried bacon . I cooked chicken, pork, and rabbit for her today...and opened 4 different cans of dog food. The little bugger wouldn't touch any of it . Last night she only ate a couple of teaspoons of baby food and 1/4 hot dog wiener. It would seem she doesn't eat at all during the day, only a wee bit at night.

She sleeps a lot, most of the day and all night but, she's a waggy butt when she's up and loves to get brushed.

Shaykeija
November 27th, 2010, 09:54 PM
Oh that poor baby needs more food than that. Pasta, boiled in chicken broth got Quincy eating. I thought pork was bad for dogs, but you got to get something into her. You might have to hand feed her and get her to lick the food off your hand. Baked potatoes, hamburger, fried liver? I wish I was closer so I could help.

hazelrunpack
November 27th, 2010, 09:57 PM
What a sweetie!! Waggy butt :flirt:

I do hope she starts eating again! Sounds like she's getting you trained up in the kitchen! I'll bet it smelled good in your house...at least till you opened the tripe. :p

luckypenny
November 27th, 2010, 10:06 PM
Shaykeija, we've tried beef and chicken liver, fried, baked, boiled. She'll only eat one or two tiny pieces of beef liver and only if it's fried. The first day she arrived, she ate a chicken meal I prepared, now she's refusing it altogether . Whatever she eats one day, she won't the next. She will eat a few morsels out of my hand or off a flat plate, she doesn't seem to like bowls. Doesn't want hamburger, nor potatoes, nor ground turkey. Not cheese nor yogurt. We've tried mild cheddar, cottage, and ricotta. Dh is making some macaroni and cheese right now. Judging by her reaction so far, it would seem she only likes junk food . She went nuts over the hot dog wiener and the ham but only a little bit before she stopped eating.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

LP do dogs stop eating prior to delivering? maybe she is just at that stage of the pregnancy. What about tripe? sardines ? maybe even boiled pasta?

TeriM
November 27th, 2010, 10:17 PM
What about toast and scrambled eggs . That often worked for Lucy.

and buy some of those arrowroot biscuits for babies, that often helped kickstart some eating.

Hope she eats better soon :goodvibes:.

November 27th, 2010, 10:21 PM
Usually 24 hours before labor begins. But her appetite has been like this since she was brought to the shelter and it's been over a week now. Her energy is good when she's awake, she's clear eyed and focuses on me. What's left of her teeth aren't in very good shape though (I've also blended a lot of the food I've offered her). She is on antibiotics for that so if it's her mouth, hopefully it will start working soon. The vets said to feed her whatever she'll eat at this point and to offer her something every two hours.

Without a word of a lie both Ginger and Hobo's first "full" meals in our home was Kraft Dinner. Both of them snubbed their noses at EVERYTHING we were offering. Like your sweety they both were coming from stressful places and had been neglected. As Kraft Dinner is my favorite thing to eat for lunch I decided to share some with Ginger after 36 hrs of her eating next to nothing and she scoffed it  Two years later, after 36 hrs with Hobo he scoffed the Kraft Dinner too  Now it is their gotcha day lunch (among many other lunches during the year :p ).

Can't hurt to try...she really needs to eat anything right now until you can get her on to some healthier stuff!

You are too funny with the messy kitchen...been there, done that :laughing::laughing:

With you in charge there is no doubt she is going to be just fine...lucky dog!!!!

Canned sardines are a no go so far. And she just made a liar out of me. She wouldn't eat the macaroni off a plate but ate 3 pieces out of the bowl in my hands . Here's another pic of Cuddles. She loves her pen! We take her out often during the day when we're moving about or just cuddling on the couch. But if one of us ignores her for a few minutes, she waddles to her pen and asks to be let back in.

hazelrunpack

She's an absolute doll :flirt: Doesn't seem to be extra skinny--or is it just the fur making her look bigger?

I'll tell you a gross secret that I used to get Evan to eat when he had no appetite. If he thought it was people food, he'd eat it, but he had to know for sure that it was people food--so it had to smell like we liked it... :o So I'd chew up some of what I wanted him to eat, spit it back into my hand and then hand feed him with it. After a couple of mouthfuls, he usually believed me and started eating on his own :thumbs up

Wow, she really is a cutie :lovestruck::lovestruck:. Are they sure she is eleven? She looks quite a bit younger to me. Maybe the pups are pushing on her tummy so she feels full even when she isn't . Is she burping at all or showing any signs of gas?

There's a good idea, Hazel...as long as it really does taste good, lol. Don't know if I could be chewing on dog food but, who knows what a desperate person might do . Her fur makes her look bigger than what she really is. I can feel ribs and hips but they're not protruding or anything. Her stomach is HUGE though.

Wow, she really is a cutie :lovestruck::lovestruck:. Are they sure she is eleven? She looks quite a bit younger to me. Maybe the pups are pushing on her tummy so she feels full even when she isn't . Is she burping at all or showing any signs of gas?

Her previous owner said she was 11 and the vets agree she's a senior . You may be right about her feeling full...the ultrasound showed that the pups are pushing all her organs. And yes, she does burp as soon as she's had a couple of morsels or licks of food. When she drinks water as well.

Any possiblity you have some nux vomica on hand? It is a homeopathic remedy very good for upset tummies and naseau. Do you think it would be okay to give her a bit of pepcid?

luckypenny

What about scrambled eggs with cheese and hotdogs cut up. Even some tripe added to entice her to eat it. It may be easy for her to eat and get more nutrition in her that just hotdogs. I am not too familiar with dog nutrition, but I would be concerned about calcium leaching from her bones and teeth for the pups. It may cause further decay of her teeth. :(

Sending lots of :goodvibes::goodvibes: her way.

luckypenny

L4H, I should have mentioned I add liquid vitamins and bone meal to anything mushy she'll eat (ie. baby food, tripe). I also have a couple of canine nutrition books with recipes so I've made her a few meals from those as well. I just have to get her to eat more than a couple of licks of it. She had more green tripe this morning which is great because she normally won't eat early in the day. I just threw an egg with ham (she liked a bit of ham last night) into the blender and fried it up with some butter. Just waiting for it to cool down before offering it to her :fingerscr.

Hi lp!
Some of these small dogs are really difficult eaters....even when they are pregnant. I know your used to big dogs or dogs who will swallow everything and anything.
Here is a great website to help you out if you need it. It has always been very helpful to me when I have pregnant dogs or orphaned puppies.
www.dogbreedinfo.com
If you get to speak to a vet this week, I would ask them about calcium. She has a lot of puppies for her size and age. So you do want to make sure that she gets enough calcium for her and for her to be able to nurse her pups afterwards. Keep on giving her cheese, eggs and yogourt.
I do have a couple of questions for you. Are you actually writing down what she eats, ie what she actually ate and quantities? Perhaps it doesn't sound like a lot, but she does have 5 puppies and they are taking up a lot of room. Also maybe she's not moving around much. Perhaps letting her have a few little walks would be good for her.
Have you tried leaving the food down in her pen and then go back and hour later to see what she has eaten? Sometimes works.
My young son was always the one hand feeding these difficult little dogs.
He loved it....and they craved the attention!
Good luck and let me know if you need anything.
Pat

TQ, I read your post this morning and thought to myself, "I offered it to her the first two days" but assumed she either didn't like it or perhaps her mouth hurt too much to eat it. Good news LP! Happy to hear she's eating. :thumbs up

Another thing you could do is mix 1 chicken boullion cube to 1/2 cup hot water then cool with a 1/2 cup cold water but toss in 4 or 5 ice cubes. Then let it cool to a slight warm temperature before letting her drink. This always worked when Gryph & Mollie had upset bellies but they especially loved bobbing for the ice cubes. Acts as electrolytes to build up strength. :)

Cuddles is doing well. She sleeps a lot but is perky and as affectionate as ever when she's awake. After a handful of kibble yesterday morning, she decided she was fed up with that too . She did accept a few pieces of the Natural Balance roll late last night but then gave up. Finally got her to eat some Wellness canned.

No puppies yet although it looks like her belly is going to explode. She likes to lay on her back with her legs in the air but then can't turn over unless I help her...she's too cute :cloud9:. Her due date is supposed to be this Sunday so if nothing happens by then, we'll be taking her into the vet hospital all the same to be looked at.

I'll try to get a pic of that soon.

Chico, Cuddles was transferred from a shelter to our rescue organization. Our rescue doesn't have a shelter, only volunteer foster homes. It helps keep the costs down (no overhead or salaries) so all resources go straight to the dogs for vet care. If everything goes well, she should be returning here with her puppies.

Cuddles is now eating about 1/2 cup Orijen and 1/3-1/2 cup of Wellness canned puppy food per day. Super perky and following me around like a little puppy. She even let out her first bark today, it sounded so funny that I thought it was a burp at first . She's doing really, really well :goodvibes:.

..her belly is pretty big eh?

Yeah, it's pretty huge.

do you have any idea what type of dog she was bred with? please say a small dog like her?

Of the 20 other dogs that came in with her, only another male Shih Tzu wasn't neutered so we're assuming that is who she was mated with. I saw him today and he's all dark gray and little bit bigger than her.

She is so adorable. Is tomorrow the day???

Her previous owner said that tomorrow is supposedly the 60th day. If she doesn't go into labor, the vet had said we can go to 63 days before bringing her in to be seen. We'll most likely do another x-ray and ultrasound and decide what to do then.

Did she have them at home or at the Vets?

It all happened very, very fast. The first two were born in the car on the way to the vets, within a minute of each other. As soon as we arrived, she had the third and then was able to relax some between the rest of them.

I am so glad she is doing fine. OMG all those puppies...

I know, eh. We knew for sure 5. After the fifth was born, she was x-rayed and 2 more puppies were visible. I thought the vet tech was joking...I had to ask her, "for real?" several times . Once it was certain everyone was good and the puppies were eating well, we came back home. She's taking such amazing care of them all :goodvibes:.

I hope Cuddles will start eating more now that her tummy has space to expand. *S*

She's eating well today. She had about 1/2 a can and a couple of handfuls of kibble last night, another 1/4 can around 5am and 1/2 a can about an hour ago. Only thing is, right now, she's only eating if I hand feed her while she's nursing so I offer her food every 2 hours. Same goes for water but I'm careful to offer her some every hour.

LOL more pictures please.....:cloud9:

For sure, in a little while I'll post more. Although right now the pups are always eating so I don't want to disturb them. I'll try to take some of them individually when I weigh them again.

will she have enough milk for 6 pups?

So far so good :fingerscr. We'll weigh them twice a day to make sure though.

the little one in the middle, is she/he all white??

No, he's got some brown spots on him. Some have small brown spots while others have more.

You know, I thought the worst of it for her would be the birthing. But watching her overnight and this morning, that was the easy part. Nursing and cleaning her pups takes so much out of her, it's non-stop. I don't know when she sleeps . There's nothing fun about watching a momma dog like her have to go through this at her age :(.

Hi lp....don't worry, cuddles is being a good mom. Just like human mom's with newborns...they sometimes have to be reminded to eat. It's normal for you to have to handfeed or remind her to eat. In a few days, she'll be comfortable enough to start to get up for a few minutes at a time and drink or eat.
I know she's finicky, but if she'll take it, you can try giving her a little beef bouillon to lap up. It will give her a little energy and help her out with feeding the pups.
Seems like she's eating ok to me. That both mom and pups are healthy and survived, is really an amazing thing. You obviously are doing something right...so don't worry so much!!
Take care.
Pat

Cuddles is still doing great. She's finally leaving to rest outside the box in between feedings. She also asked to leave the playpen twice today to stretch and run around in the big room outside the bedroom for a few minutes but runs right back to the pen as soon as she hears a peep. She's up to almost half a can of puppy food every 4 hours now. She still won't eat unless I hand feed her while she's nursing  but, it's my pleasure to do anything for her at this point :cloud9:.

...could we see some faces in the next pic that you are taking tomorrow;)

You're as subtle as L4H, Chico .

Here are a few more that'll have to last you guys a couple of days. I try not to disturb them unless it's weigh-in time or when I have to move the two wee ones for extra feedings when their porky siblings are napping. Hercules weighed in at 200 grams this evening. One of his sisters, Suziecakes :D, is close behind at 180 grams. The two wee ones, Lil' 'Loudmouth' Laurie and Munchkin Murphy, are only 114 and 115 grams each. Cuddles really is wonderful :cloud9:. She's starting to ask to go right outside today. Only for a minute or two but it's nice to get her out in the fresh air.

How are Lucky, Penny, and Nukka doing with the pups?

We keep them separated at all times, L4H. Cuddles doesn't know them at all (and our guys are too active) so I don't want to stress her. We keep ours upstairs and they use the back yard. Cuddles has my son's bedroom/livingroom downstairs and has access to the entire basement when she wants her zoomies. When she wants outside, we use the front yard. I don't imagine we'll be introducing them.

They sniffed like mad at the basement door when Cuddles first arrived. Lucky scratched at the door a few times but he's stopped since. Nukka and Penny aren't reacting at all; Nukka just looks at me with her pitiful puppy eyes every time I go downstairs with a plate of food in my hands :D.

Lucky's being a bit of a jerk with the girls but that's not really new...he can be bullyish sometimes even when we don't have fosters so we just keep a close eye on him and don't leave the three of them together unattended. Dh was out of town for a few days and I noticed Lucky was acting up more during that time so I just did a lot of distraction and management.

It's different to hear of their weights as grams instead of kilo's or pounds. :o

Because of where I used to work, I keep comparing them to slices of salami . "Oh look! Murphy went from 20 slices to 25 slices of salami" and "Suziecakes weighs 34 slices!" and "Hercules is gaining 4 slices of salami a day!" .

luckypenny
December 14th, 2010, 09:57 PM
Hercules now weighs 61 slices of salami.... :D

Cuddles and pups continue to do great. They're all growing so fast and Cuddles is up to 4 large cans of food per day . I can tell she's gaining weight as well as I can't easily feel her hip bones anymore :highfive:. Hopefully by next week, I'll manage to get close-up photos of each of the pups.

Here's a pic of the her with the puppies in her pen. We use the bottom half of an extra large Cargo crate as a whelping box and it's worked out really well. There's a heating pad on one half of it so that's where the puppies tend to nest while Cuddles prefers to lay on the half without where it's cooler.

I think we'll have a great big celebration when she gets spayed. As wonderful as she is with her pups, it's obvious how hard it is on her. She really enjoys going outside now, she has a bounce in her step and likes to wander all over the front yard. Never longer than 10 minutes though, then she runs back to the door to be let in. When she's outside of her pen, she runs from room to room to see if anyone else is there for some lovings :cloud9:, then runs back to her puppies to check on them, then runs around looking for more affection from everyone.
