well, lets just say,
(igotanewkittenandimveryexcitedthatihaveacatonceag ain) i have a new friend.

i was with my friend at the "animal flee market" about 2 weeks or so ago.

he was looking for a kitten.
we were nearing the end of our patience and were about to leave, until... my friend spotted a kitten crawling near some woooden crate kinda base-thing.

now, i went over, in hopes that he would adopt her. i asked him if he'd want it, and he gave a simple yes. so, i reached my hand out slowly to test out its boundaries. it was nice to see a kitten that didnt run away, and instead, meow.

so i touched it and petted it, it was lying down btw.

i tried pulling it gently, no irritation, just meowed some more.

so i then proceeded to pry it out of its position so my friend can take it (who later decided not to). i did instead , and well... shes amazing to say the least.

she was emaciated, and really emotionally withdrawn. didnt complain, didnt really do anything. weighed nothing.

got is some water, didnt drink much, took it home, washed it with animal shampoo, and really just gave it a nice place to crash for the rest of its life :P.

anyhow, she was really easy when it came to getting comfortable enough to sleep in some new environment.
after maybe the second day, i already had her curled up and pushed against my neck/cheek/ears while i slept. its amazing because, sew sew and kiko never let themselfs go when it came to sleep and me moving around at the same time. would always wake up. with nunu, its like... shes really sleeping lol.

i noticed though that she was abnormally hot, like... uncomfortable for me .

so i took her to the vet (finally eh?) and he gave her a check up.

her body temperature was a whopping 42 degrees C!!

i was surprised.

he gave me like, 5-7, green, crushable, splitable pills.

he showed me how to feed her them (which in his case ment to open her mouth, and shove it down to the back of her mouth with the "gentle" push of the end of an pen).

i tried to do it, but ended up having her spit it out, but i managed to notice that if i got it to the middle of her tongue, she'd eventually swallow it.

anyhow, 2-3 days (as the doc said) and she was eating, a healthy ammount.

im very happy to say that shes gained 100% percent of her weight back, and a little extra!

shes got a nice temparment, a nice coat, and beautiful eyes. oh and a cute meow too. she resembles sew sew a lot. except, shes much more orange, eyes are yellowish - dark orange, and she has a nice white torsoe.

anyhow, shes gotten used to sleeping with me from 7PM and above, so much so that she starts to meow for it.

i think i can say im a much better pet owener now than i was when i had sew-sew-steve. i owe it to him to be the best owner i can, because i feel like it was my ignorance that drove him away.

anyhow, Nunu is her name (courtesy of my mom, whom by the way loves nunu, and even sometimes walks into the room to pet her and check up on her!), she hasnt caused any allergies for my mom yet, and i think its because of the shampoo i got.

its labeled Kars, and has a crappy picture of a dog and a cat on it. labeled "deoderizing shampoo"

anyhow, i dont want to bable on very much, but im just glad that i can say im a pet owner again!

i managed to clip her nails without having to deal with any fuss, she naturally goes to my shoulder when im driving. she also likes to sleep on my lap while im driving. why i even let her do this? well she goes crazy when shes in the cage, once she figures out, that she cant leave, she doesnt like it.

anyhow, it cant be all that great without a little cons, am i right?

you know how when you get up from sitting in one spot for a long time, and you hear a crack on your elbow, or your knee or something like that?
well i've heard a crack or two from nunu since i've had her.

i will tell the vet, but i figured, why not share it for the time being? (which is two weeks until i get her vaccinated!)

her stool is black, and small.

i feed her wet food only, purina's classic patte. i have different flavours of the same stuff, to make things more "interesting" for her.

she also isnt cleaning herself that much, oh! i forgot to say that shes 3-3.5 months old.

really, a nice cat. and im gonna try and post some pics up when i can.

thanks,

ibrahim

I'm happy to hear you have a new kitty. Definitely pictures are a must when you get the chance.:D

I do wonder how you managed to convince your mom to let you have another cat given her allergy issues with Kiko. I do hope it works out this time as it would be terrible to have to rehome Nunu if problems should arise again.

That being said, I believe there are many things that can be done. Although I don't agree with bathing kitties unless absolutely necessary, I know it is done. Just try not to bathe her too often and make sure all the residue from the shampoo is rinsed out, as any shampoo residue can cause irritation. I am not familiar with the Kars shampoo you are using. Please make sure it does not also contain flea medication, as some over-the-counter flea products even here in Canada have proved to be unsafe for cats and are not recommended.

Here is a link to some tips pertaining to cat allergies:

http://cats.about.com/od/allergiesandcats/a/allergictocat.htm

Of course ignore the cat in bedroom or on the bed part since you are not the one who suffers from allergies.:)

Some people wash their cats to reduce the amount of cat allergen that is released from their cat into the air, but research seems to be conflicting about its effectiveness. Allerpet, a well-known brand of liquid that reduces cat allergen in the air, can be applied to your cats' coat and is available from your local veterinarian. Alternatively, you can get a micro fiber cloth and just damp rub down the cats' coats to rid it of visible dander. The majority of cats would prefer this to the highly dreaded bath.

I don't know if Allerpet is available in your country, but if you can get micro fiber cloths you could try sometimes using that instead of a bath.

i noticed though that she was abnormally hot, like... uncomfortable for me .

so i took her to the vet (finally eh?) and he gave her a check up.

her body temperature was a whopping 42 degrees C!!

im very happy to say that shes gained 100% percent of her weight back, and a little extra.

Glad to hear Nunu is feeling better and has gained weight.:thumbs up I have always found when I had to pill a cat, that what works well for me is, after I have put the pill as far back in the mouth as possible (I just use my fingers) I immediately stroke him/her under the chin in a downward motion. Most cats love this and not only does it help them "forget" you just put a pill in their mouth, but they naturally point their head in an upward direction. Stroking under the chin also encourages them to swallow. Works great for me anyway.

i think i can say im a much better pet owener now than i was when i had sew-sew-steve. i owe it to him to be the best owner i can, because i feel like it was my ignorance that drove him away.

Not being neutered may have had something to do with him leaving too.

You have learned a lot since you first came on here. As I have said before, learning is a lifelong experience and none of us started off knowing how to best take care of our pets. No matter what stage we are at, there is always still more for us to learn.

i will tell the vet, but i figured, why not share it for the time being? (which is two weeks until i get her vaccinated!)

her stool is black, and small.

i feed her wet food only, purina's classic patte. i have different flavours of the same stuff, to make things more "interesting" for her.

I know you are limited in your choices of available food but any wet food is better than dry for a kitty. Great that you are feeding her only wet.:thumbs up

Black stool is usually an indication of blood in the stool which can be there for a number of reasons. Perhaps you could try to take a fresh stool sample with you when you go for the vaccinations. This could help identify the cause. Hookworms, for example, can cause the stool to be black. I take it she has not been dewormed yet.

Again, congratulations on your new kitty. Looking forward to more updates and, of course, pictures.

Congratulations on rescuing this young kitten. Love the name "Nunu". I'm glad to hear you're right on top of getting her checked out by a vet, yes you've learned a lot since Sew Sew & Kiko. Do take in a fresh stool sample s suggested by Mikischo, as black stool usually does indicate blood in stool. Hope you'll have this sweet little girl as a friend for a looong time. All the best!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Mikischo thank you for the link, was quit heplful.

I will say though, maybe it was s mistake, or a step made too soon, but I adopted another cat. She's about a year or so. Very nice and welcoming temparment.

The problem is that nunu is the aggrivated one, I'm not surprised, she's not well socialized with other cats. She was hissing at my friends 2 month old when they met. She hisses at Cleo (yes that's her name) when Cleo gets too close.

I'm currently in bed on my iPod touch, meaning they are with me in the room. Cleo next tomy right shoulder, and nunu just under my armpit.

I realize this is stressful for nunu, this bigger cat is in her home, playing with her strings, eating, sleeping with the owner, scratching her chair.

But to be honest, Cleo hasn't shown any aggression. At all, unless nunu gets in her face and starts to paw, Cleo makes a gentle growl and kinda slowly paws.

Now after one day, nunu is already easing up bit by bit. Not to the extent that she'd play, but she's growing more tolerant of cleo in a very small manner.

Ontop of that, she's a little aggrivated from the trip to the vet, And the eye/nostrils/and mouth droplets. Plus medicin through a syring (speaking of which, she doesn't really open her mouth very easily, I have to really hold her in place, which she doesn't like. I'm quick to praise after I'm done.)

I took a towel and rubbed it on Cleo, then nunu, then Cleo, etc...etc... Maybe 6-7 times. I think it said 15 minutes on 14+'s sticky, not sure, I'll do it later with time and not quantity. Anyhow, they are not allowed to leave my room (which is 26-27 degrees c. I also leave the window open for ventilation.) so I can't exactly-- I don't know exactly how to make a "nunu" only area.

Nunu did slowly ease up (but not fully with) my friends 2 month old during the. Time they were together (1.5. Days).

I have two different plates of food, one for each, but on occasion(when Cleo is hungry ) she will go to nunu's plate I guess cause it's closer, but I always pick her up and put her where her food is. Nunu knows where her plate is though.

They are currently both snoozing, same places, but that is a good sign right?

Anyhow, I'm gonna take a fresh stool to the doc. Though i can't say for certain that it's gonna be fresh.

Also , I got a promotion at work, meaning I get a raise, so I think things will work out.

You are moving a little fast there. However, on the other hand since you don't have the space to allow for slow introductions it might be for the best. Since both kitties are relative newcomers to your home, neither has been there long enough to firmly establish their new territory. A little bit of hissing on Nunu's part and gentle growls and slow pawing from Cleo doesn't sound too serious. If things don't get worse than that you are doing all right and they should get better.

Now that you have two kitties it is double the cost. Congratulations on your promotion. That should help. Where did you get Cleo from? Do you know if she was recently vet checked or was ever vaccinated. That is another thing to consider. Keep us up to date on how things are going.

Here's an update:

Yesterday I took Cleo back to that horrible place, I feel horrible but I couldn't do anything else. She was amazing but there was too many issues.
My mom for one, her allergies significantly increased.

Also, nunu was not having it, she'd hiss at Cleo even when she's asleep and has no idea that nunu is right next to her.

Anyhow, instead, i adopted Gambit, from the newcommer Giovanni.

I did some reading and put gambit in a washroom two doors down from mybedroom.
I'm gonna take ten day steps. And not introduce until they're both healthy and vaccinated.

Cleo had flees I think. Because she would shake her head like a dog and scratch a lot. Not only that, nunu has started to scratch her ear and shake her head aswell. I just hope I don't catch it... can I?

Gambit had dome trouble passing her stool, so I took the liberty ofgently squeezing her abdomen, it worked, she's still got a little trouble but she's good on her own. I'm dividing my time with them, being more with nunu. Like, 65-70% with nunu.

Anyhow, I let nunu out to go and sniff the door to gambits room.
Justto let her be aware that another cat us there, though she's meows alot every once in a while.

Anyhow, that's all there is for now. Sorry if I'm writing essay-long posts.

ear scracthing is usually ear mites and steve, 2 cats are enough right now i know you want to save all of then but start with two ok?

If Cleo's shaking her head, she probably has ear mites, not necessarily fleas. Have you had her checked out by a vet yet? If it's ear mites, she'll need medication in ears to get rid of the mites.

Just curious....why do you make things so difficult for yourself? Picking up a cat at a "flea market" is no better than picking one up off the street. They're more than likely to be sick with a URI, infested with worms, have fleas and ear mites. Why didn't you go to a humane society or rescue organization to get one that's already vet checked, etc.???

sew sew lives in a country where rescue orgs are almost non existent

There are 2 animal rescue places in Kuwait and SSS is aware of these from a previous thread about his kitten KiKo.

Here are some lovely kittens and cats ready to be adopted:

Catlover, that's a good question.
Why am I making it harder for myself? Well I honestly don't know how to answer that.

Tobe fair though, I tried goin to the humane society( animal friends) and I got lost. It's about a 20 minute drive tomy house to getto thrcamping roads, then it's an hour drive or sofrom there. Ontop of that, igot lost trying to go before.
I even tried google earth but u was still confused...

Anyhow, I'm gonna take nunu and gambit for a check up together onthe 22nd or so.

Good news, gambit and nunu are getting along for the most part.
Little hissing here and there, some minor growling and bullying on nun's part (I.e. Running up, pouncing and running away).

The have small unharmful exchanes of slaps, the slow motion ones, butitslater followed Hume distracting or them just looking away from each other. Theychase eachother and whatnot, they are quite tolerant of each other so far. I took gambits stuff and put it in my room, because he meows for too LNG, and too loud.
The good thing is that they are going to eachothers litterboxes ( which I have stuckright next to eachother, but each inside a cardboard box to minimize any mess) and none gets angry at the other.

I was thinking of what mIkischo said, about howtwo cats should be able to adapt if both arenew and have not established thierterritories.
With that being said I let each out of their rooms and tookboth to neutral ground... The living room.

Anyhow, all is well so far..

Any home remedies for earmites? (yeah I know the questin seems a little far feched)

I'm open to any kind of constructive criticism, so don't hold back.

Thanks,

Abe

SSS,I am sorry I was not going to reply, but you bringing Cleo back to a"terrible"place ,just riles me,one thing you should think of...you do not get a perfectly great cat,get her used to regular food etc...and just dump her,flea-ridden and who knows what else:(
Cats are little lives, with feelings,in putting her back where you found her,she is probably doomed.
Your moms allergies will be the same,no matter what cat you get,so please stop rescuing, unless you are serious about it,cats are not disposable,no matter where you live.My :2cents:

I agree, it was immature of me. I don't feel the slightest good about it.
On the bright side, cats there don't last one week, they are usually sold really quickly.

I will say though that it does make a difference when it comes to my mothers allergies, it's bad enough as it is, Cleo added to it significantly.

Don't think I don't understand that cats have lives, and don't think that I took it back on a whim. I'm well aware of what I did, and like I said before, I'm not proud of it. It was 24 hours, so i don't think there was too much getting used to for her. Theey feed them wet food though, but not a lot.

On the flipside though, nunu and gambit are very good together, no negativity whatsoever.

Until you get your kitties to the vet, you should be cleaning out the ear mites at least twice a day to keep help decrease the numbers, otherwise Gambit will get them too if he hasn't already.

Here's a link that may help in the meantime. Tea tree oil can usually be found in a drug store or health food store here in Canada so maybe in Kuwait too? It will not kill the mites, but may prevent an infection from scratching.

Use a cotton ball, not one of those swabs, to clean the ears.

Thank you so much. To be frank, I'm starting to worrie about myself now.

Snce tea tree oil is something I've never known about till now, I'm gonna gonfor the Rosemary since my mom probably has it somewhere.

Any idea on how to apply it? I'm guessing I use a cotton ball aswell?

mikischo
August 8th, 2010, 01:36 PM
One of the safest products to use would be something like olive oil and you may even have some on hand in your kitchen. Yes, cotton balls are good. The reason not to use cotton swabs is the ear could easily be damaged.

By the way, there is no danger of ear mites being spread to humans. I believe you asked about that in an earlier post.

Sew-sew-steve
August 8th, 2010, 02:02 PM
yes it said ear mites seldome infect humans, but I was still warty till you posted. I mean, they both sleep on my he'd, gambit always wants to sleep on my chest, nunu always cuddles up on me or next to me. But when another cat is around she's not as cuddly, but she's grown very tolerant of gambit.
I recently washed gambit cause hegad fecies pn his shoulderb blades, don't know how that got there, anyway, I washed him, and when nunu got close she hissed, guessing cause of thdchange in smell, so I took gambits blanket, and rubbeed it on him for a minute. I smelled the the blanke and realized that there was fecies on it too. So frusterated , but it would just be harmful psychologically ifi washed him again that quick, so I left it.

I did however, spray a tad bit of house freshner ( the Arabic stuff isn't as concentrated as th western stuff, it's got very little alcohol), is that ok?

Anyhow, im just gonna use olive oil.

Blah it's a pain to write so much on this thing.
