American Kestrel rescue.....

Hi!

Just want let everyone know that I now have an American Kestrel (male) in my porch!

He's in a container waiting for me to take hime to the vet college.

I had to work a bit late last night and as I was driving I came across the little guy, he was hit by a truck!

I know this because the driver of the truck turned around and came back after hitting him but by that time I had already picked him up and was searching for a box in my car!

He is a male American Kestrel who may possibly have a broken left wing.
His wing looks injured and the way he was laying on it didn't look good.

I kept him over night in the porch (where its cool, quiet and dark) and will be taking him to the vet clinic this AM.

He looks a lot better this morning....i would take a pic but I don't want to stress him anymore (we have an hour drive ahead of us).

I will keep you posted on how he does!

Hey, took so long to get on here again! After the site went down for a few days, my laptop stopped working!

So, I have an update.....although its not a good one :(

When I took him (who actually turned out to be a Merlin....how I got them confused..I don't know!) to the vet collage it turns out that both his left wing and leg were broken.

Since both were broken, it would be too stressful for the bird to try and rehabilitate him :(

So he was humanely euthanized.

The guy from the vet college got the paperwork in order to sign the bird back over to me and I got a permit the wildilfe department and now I'm getting him mounted.

I really wanted to see him get better and go back to the wild.....but atleast he didn't have to die on the side of the road.

Carolyn,I have no idea what a Merlin is,but I am really sorry he did not make it:(
At least he passed in a safe place,was not killed by other birds or cats.
