hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 02:02 PM Ms Muddy Mossy Messy Macie is dedicated to keeping Hazel Run safe from the Dangerous Butterfly.
"We've never had a serious maiming or injury due to butterflies at Hazel Run," she barks, "and I'm determined to keep it that way!!"
Of course, to guarantee everyone's safety, she must run several Dangerous Butterfly Patrols each day.
They seem to like the gardens, so she checks them all thoroughly.

This day, the chives check out clean...but what's that at the bottom of the hill??!!??
67605
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 02:06 PM It's a Swallowtail!
Not as perilous as some varieties, but still requiring Ms Muddy Mossy Messy Macie's talents in Butterfly Detection and Escort.
67606
67607
67608
After some solo stalk-and-point, the Swallowtail is safely escorted to the perimeter and flits away over the fence.
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 02:10 PM Other species of butterflies are more dangerous , like this Perilous Pearly-eye!
67609
Ms Macie is perfectly capable of detecting and escorting even such formidable butterflies to the perimeter by herself...
67610
...but it's always nice to have a little backup.

:D
Rgeurts July 18th, 2010, 02:50 PM That's just hilarious! We have a couple of "bug hunters" as well :D
Who wouldn't feel safe with Ms Macie making the rounds?
I love your story lines, Hazel! And that close up of the butterfly, what a great picture!
TwinTails July 18th, 2010, 03:15 PM Oh Hazel, your puppers are stunningly beautiful! :cloud9:
Frenchy July 18th, 2010, 04:01 PM What a good hunter Macie is :lovestruck:
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 04:07 PM Thanks, TT and Rgeurts. :D
And that close up of the butterfly, what a great picture!
That's a Northern Pearly-eye, I believe...or, as Ms MMMMacie calls them, Perilous Pearly-eyes. They have particularly strange and sinister eyes that reflect their dangerous nature. :D
What a good hunter Macie is
She is certainly dedicated, I'll give her that! :dog: She's been known to miss meal calls because she's been too focussed on her duties.
But facts don't lie--and she's absolutely right that we've had no injuries or maimings from butterflies at Hazel Run...so her persistence and dedication are paying off!
chico2 July 18th, 2010, 04:11 PM Hazel,love it:laughing:I have 3 butterfly-hunters,unfortunately for them,I don't let them catch them.
I hope we get more butteflies this year than last year:fingerscr
serenamlambe July 18th, 2010, 04:12 PM Hahah, what a wonderful girl you have - keeping the rest of the pack safe!
I love your picture storiess! :)
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 04:18 PM Thanks, Serena. She does do a great job keeping us safe!
Chico, so far, our butterfly counts seem up from last year :fingerscr I've already seen more monarchs this year than I did all of last year! Lots of fritillaries, too, and the red admirals just hatched out. :thumbs up So I'm hoping the heat and humidity is doing them some good!
breeze July 18th, 2010, 04:23 PM ms Macie you are doing an excellent job keeping everyone safe..
:thumbs up:thumbs up
now how are you with spiders, ants earwigs, and this brown bug that sticks to everything it touches
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 04:30 PM They don't care for the really little bugs that the can't easily see. :o Especially if those little bugs are biters! The Sheriff has been known to get quite panicky when out on the deck amongst no-see-ems, for example... I think he figures the bites are from invisible ghost bugs. :dog:  Poor guy really hates bugs!!
Are you talking about those big brown bugs with the pincers that latch on? Those are a hoot--big enough for them to see, till the dogs lose track of them when they latch on to their fur! They spend many pleasurable minutes trying to find them again!
breeze July 18th, 2010, 04:59 PM invisible ghost bugs. :dog:

those would be the earwigs we have around here, but there are other ones that are like a beetle shape and are very sticky, they seem to shed there shells..
Archer loves to eat those ones.:eek:
the amount of bugs Arch brings inside as a present for me has a lot ot be desired.:frustrated:
Dee-O-Gee July 18th, 2010, 08:08 PM Happy to see that Ms. Macie still has her ABC skills and alos having a back up plan! :thumbs up
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 09:01 PM breeze, Arch is a growing boy! He just needs extra protein! :D
Happy to see that Ms. Macie still has her ABC skills and alos having a back up plan! :thumbs up
Yep, and is still the only licensed BCE (Butterfly Chaser Extraordinaire) in the region. :D
Dee-O-Gee July 18th, 2010, 09:06 PM I didn't know that she advanced from an ABC to BCE? :lightbulb:
When did she go from Advanced to Extraordinaire?
hazelrunpack July 18th, 2010, 09:42 PM 2 or 3 years ago...can't remember for sure. Sometime after she began giving her BDET (Butterfly Detection and Escort Technique) classes
Myka July 18th, 2010, 09:56 PM Haha, great photos!
Tundra_Queen July 19th, 2010, 12:47 AM Great pictures and good job Miss Macie!!
I wish someone would teach our dogs to hunt bugs! Not butterflies but bugs. I hate bugs they completely freak me out! I've tried to get Tegan and Mindy to catch them telling them it's free food,,but they don't move! And all the cats do is watch the bugs walk away.
Maybe that could be my excuse for getting another dog...bug control!
hazelrunpack July 19th, 2010, 03:17 PM Our dogs aren't very good on rank-and-file bugs, either, TQ. Wish they were! But the best they can do is act as skeeter magnets, so as to thin out the clouds that are buggin' us. :p At least till we all skedaddle for the shelter of the house :D
JennieV July 19th, 2010, 07:29 PM hahaha... Love the back-up!
hazelrunpack July 20th, 2010, 11:27 AM Notice they're not getting too close? Gotta be mighty careful around those Dangerous Butterflies! :D
growler~GateKeeper July 31st, 2010, 01:52 AM Excellent work Macie :lovestruck: :thumbs up
Love4himies July 31st, 2010, 08:23 AM Oh, Miss Macie, your Butterfly hunting skills get better and better every year. Thank goodness you are keeping up and enhancing this skill :thumbs up. Hopefully you will be able to pass this one to another energetic, Butterfly hunting enthusiast   :cloud9: :lovestruck:
hazelrunpack July 31st, 2010, 10:41 AM She offers classes in her patented BDET (Butterfly Detection and Escort Techniques), L4H, so as to keep up the pool of qualified ABC (Ace Butterfly Chaser) and BCE (Butterfly Chaser Extraordinaire) security forces!
She does do good work, doesn't she, growler? :lovestruck: We feel soooo safe! :cloud9:
Love4himies July 31st, 2010, 12:26 PM With all those acronyms, I am going to start thinking Madam Hazel and Miss Macie are secret gov't workers , perhaps working as secret service
