moving an outside cat

We are moving to a new home and have an older cat who has always been an outside cat. We are worried about him not sticking around when we move. Any ideas?

Make him be an indoor cat, then you won't have to worry. :)

We had the same concern when we moved an outdoor cat or ours, but it wasn't a problem at all -- in our case we moved from small town to the country, and he expanded his territory accordingly. I would probably let your kitty spend a little time indoors so he knows that it's his house... Also, you must have some kitty home outside right? Make sure you take it with you... I wouldn't necessarily make your cat an indoor one as Sneaky said, unless both you and that cat wouldn't mind!! BTW Sneaky, your avatar ALWAYS makes me happy!!!

I know both parties would have to be willing. Just that I've known two families with outdoor cats and the older they got the more they wanted to be inside and if they move, it may be hard on him.

Thanks for the comment, moon, he makes me happy too!!! :D

Hi,

There is quite a lot of info in both the articles section of the site and pet tips section.

Here is a pet tip that addresses your issue.

Thanks

I have feral cats who were never inside a house in their lives, and now they stay in.

The problem with moving older cats and letting them outside is that in the new neighbourhood, they have no "senority" and WILL be beaten up by the other cats out there. I really suggest you keep your cat in or get him a harness, or build a small enclosure outside so he can safely enjoy the outdoors!:)

I hope that link works....they have tons of cool stuff! I so want that SUV stroller so my 'kids' can come on my walks with me. Great for outdoor cats you want to keep track of and for indoor cats you want to have fresh air!
