Rest In Peace Baby Phoenix

July 15th, 2010, 11:17 AM
It is with great sadness that we found out this morning that the Hornby Island baby eagle Phoenix passed away during the evening.

For all of us that watched this little guy grow in such a short time, we will miss you. :(

Here's my original post regarding this miracle;

Phoenix was like an office mascot for myself and fellow co-workers. One of us always checked on him at least once a day and brought the website home to our families. It was a sudden shock to hear of this, this morning.

They posted the following statement on the website;

Doug and Sheila Carrick, the Hornby Eagle Group, and friends are shocked and saddened to report the sudden death of our beloved Phoenix at 7:19 nest time, Wednesday, July 14.

Yesterday afternoon a rescue effort was underway, but Phoenix collapsed and had difficulty breathing. He died from unknown causes, at an age (76 days) where this is very rarely seen.

His body was removed from the nest shortly after 1 P.M. on Thursday, July 15. He will be taken to Vancouver island MARS wildlife rehabilitation centre where he will be examined and necropsied by a skilled veterinarian and wildlife rehabilitator.

We ask that you remember him by supporting the work of the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) (, who moved heaven and earth to get help to him.

We love you Phoenix and we mourn with Mom and Dad Hornby.
