What is our birds sex

September 7th, 2004, 09:49 PM
My dau. Raine was given a white dove. An elderly lady gave it to her. She wants to know how to tell if its a boy or girl? Thank you!

Hi there, if no one replies about how to tell what the sex is, you can always take the bird to a certified avian vet, and they can perform a DNA sexing test on the bird (usually just a portion of the wing.) Some birds can only be sexed this way, I'm not sure about doves, but my green-cheeked conure had to be dna sexed.

For us, it cost $25.00, because our breeder had it done for us before we picked him up, but if you went to a vet I'm sure it would be a bit more.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. We don't really know anything about birds. Just gave this one a home. I will have to do some research to find out if they need vitamins...or what ever. Do you know any good bird web sites? km

Here is an excellent bird website. They can tell you how to feed, house, etc this bird.

Oh I love the sound a dove makes! :)

I don't know about doves, but with many domestic birds, the skin on their nose will be darker if it is a male, and quite pale if it is a female. Some breeds you just can't tell at all, without testing.

Just found this site while looking for something completely different (go figure!).
I didn't hunt around enough to look into cost, but at least it's good to know it's an option. :D
