mummummum April 5th, 2010, 12:56 PM Clearing out some more of Declan's gear I came across a bottle of phenylpropanolamine pills and noticed that they are in plain gelatine capsules ~ no drug manufacturer markings. Ceili's Propalin (phenyl.) was in liquid form and direct from the manufacturer.
Now, phenyl. is banned as an OTC in Canada and I don't think it can be prescribed except for veterinary use. Has anyone else seen phenyl. in powdered form and as a banned pharmaceutical, why aren't there manufacturer markings on the capsules?
Chris21711 April 5th, 2010, 01:06 PM I have no idea on what you're asking MMM, but on Friday I was clearing out meds for the guys and came across Cocoa's :rip:.....it was hard going :( so :grouphug:'s to you.

I could I suppose but I'm still considering lodging a complaint against them regarding Declan's diagnosis and care.
Given it's banned status in Canada, I'm thinking along the lines that it may be a placebo. If I pursue the complaint, I'll have the pills analyzed at an independent lab. I just wondered if anyone had ever received anything like this from their Vet.

Sorry, mums, I didn't know. :grouphug:
I would think that coming from the vet they should have some markings on them.

sugarcatmom April 5th, 2010, 05:25 PM Has anyone else seen phenyl. in powdered form and as a banned pharmaceutical, why aren't there manufacturer markings on the capsules?
My guess is that the powder is from a compounding pharmacy rather than an actual manufacturer.

I have had other meds from a compound pharmacy in an unlabelled form sans monograph and that would make sense if it wasn't a banned substance Sugarcatmom. I'll need to blow the dust off some legislation but I think it has to be dispensed in a formula directly by the manufacturer for liability reasons.

hazelrunpack April 5th, 2010, 07:26 PM MMM, they didn't ban PPA until quite recently here--is it possible Declan's pills were from a compounding pharmacy from pre-ban times?

Banned for human use, yes, but I thought it was still available for veterinary use from compounding pharmacies with a prescription. I wonder if you were to contact Summit Veterinary Pharmacy (http://www.svprx.ca/) in Aurora if they would be able to give you more info.
