Stacer February 7th, 2010, 09:11 PM Anyone know of a reputable, comfortable kennel in Halton Region? We're looking to board Skylar while we're away in mid February.
We thought we had it figured out, we were going to have her stay in the home of a lady who pet sits the cats when we go away. We had our trial run with her today, but Skylar and her resident dog did not see eye to eye, so we decided that it wouldn't be fair to either pooch to try and force them to live together for 9 days.
So our search continues for an appropriate place for Skylar. She's still having social issues with other dogs so we have to be certain that the kennel that she stays in will meet her needs for human interaction and not put her in group situations with other dogs. I'm also concerned about her level of stress being surrounded by barking dogs and not being able to see or meet the dogs. It might just drive her nuts.
This will be our first time leaving Skylar since we got her. I'm feeling very guilty about it.

I know that feeling :(. Luckily my mom usually takes my furries so we are pretty lucky. Have you thought about bringing in a house sitter in instead of boarding her?
Melinda February 8th, 2010, 06:53 AM Stacer, she stayed a full day at my friends kennel (had her spa day donated to her) she was in with 8 other dogs and did fine, and when put in the "kennel" (separate quarters with a bed and window door) for their afternoon break/nap, she did well there also and didn't mind it at all, don't feel quilty, she may enjoy her time in a kennel with other dogs and supervised play. she was at the kennel from 8 am till 5 pm. and happy as a lark, but tired, when I picked her up. I so wish I lived closer to you.
Golden Girls February 8th, 2010, 08:03 AM I hope you can find someone Stacer :goodvibes: It's too bad Melinda lives so far away I'm sure Skylar would love to spend time again with both her & Brina.
I can understand how hard it will be :( Hopefully through friends, family or coworkers someone might offer?
les February 8th, 2010, 05:14 PM Hi Stacer =)
I grew up in the Mississauga area and here a couple that I have used and really liked ...
This one is in Grimsby: Clovelly Kennels (905) 945-8519 - - I lived there for years and used that kennel many times. It is really nice. They don't put dogs together - only from the same family. You can pay for extra play times with the staff members. It's pretty expensive (and I moved from there 3 years ago). The same woman still owns it - she and her husband live in a house on the property.
I've also used Wag A Way Kennel in Oakville. http://www.wagaway.com/
I only used that place once but it was awesome too =)
Good luck finding a place ... I hope one of those works out for you!! =)
Stacer February 8th, 2010, 05:40 PM I wish Melinda lived closer, that would be the ideal situation for Skylar. Unfortunately no family or friends are willing to help out :( If it was for a shorter period of time, my parents would have done it, but my mom isn't a huge animal lover so....
We went and did a drop in visit at a kennel this afternoon, they didn't hesitate to let us have a tour. It smelled really clean and it seems as though the guy has lots of experience with dogs. We may look into another one nearby just to be sure we're making the right decision.
It's so stressful to find the right place for our babies when we're away :D
Melinda February 8th, 2010, 06:17 PM what are the names of them Stacer?
Stacer February 8th, 2010, 09:27 PM The one we went to today was Club Bekker Kennels. We're going to go visit Escarpment Pet Retreat on Wednesday, it looks really nice.
Melinda February 8th, 2010, 09:45 PM I like the club bekker, at the other one you pay for workers to pet your dog...it really didn't sound good, 10 dollars for 20 minutes of petting...so..how do they prove they did it? Bekkers reminds me a lot of Shannons where skylar spent her spa day. Let me know how you like the second one after your tour
Bearsmom February 10th, 2010, 12:01 AM What about Wolfman K9 (Mike)?
We use him for Molly's obedience, and have boarded our guys there on occasion.
Here's the link:

I truly trust him with our dogs and their "special" ways....lol

Skylar probably wouldn't do well in an environment where she'd be in contact with other dogs 24/7.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Stacer February 10th, 2010, 06:15 PM We visited Escarpment Pet Retreat today. It was really nice. We booked Skylar in. There were several things about it that made our decision easy. The kennels are only along one wall, no kennels facing each other. They get individual walks and playtime, no group play, so no chance of something going wrong. And Skylar will get a complimentary bath before she comes home :D
We went with one of their packages, so she'll get some one on one time with staff, a nice walk outside daily, and extra treats throughout the day.
I still feel awful about leaving her for 9 days though.
Golden Girls February 11th, 2010, 09:01 AM Glad to hear you found a place your happy with to board Skylar. It's hard leaving our fuzzbutts but she'll be ok :grouphug:
Melinda February 11th, 2010, 09:10 AM wow it sounds like you hit a good place stacer, don't worry, she'll be fine!! enjoy your vacation.
