Animals I met in Egypt

Thought I'd share some of the cuties I came across.

I especially loved the baby donkey (shared a pic of him before) that I met in Luxor at Gezirat al Mooz, Banana Island - where lots of banana trees grow.

As we were going through our tour we came across this fellow and I asked Amm Abdu (Uncle Abdou), our wonderful 'skipper' and impromptu tour guide, if I could pet him. I wasnt sure donkeys liked to pet :o

Amm Abdou showing me how it's done. Isn't the donkey seriously cute?

My turn my turn :D

Onster,
Do you think the donkey's Mama was telling him not to act like an @ss?
:D

Now this pup I did not meet of course, but I loved the obvious great relationship that once existed between him and his owner. This drawing was at the Gayer Anderson Museum in Cairo, which is basically two 15th and 16th century old houses that were joined by a bridge and restored by a british mayor called John Anderson Mayor in the 1930's (ill post pics in the non-pet subforum later). Anderson was an avid collector and made an agreement with the egyptian authorities that if he could have the houses rent free for the remainder of his life that, upon his leaving, he would leave the houses to the government housed with all his precious collections.

Anyhooo back on topic, this drawing done of his beloved Dashhund Fadl Effendi hangs in one of the rooms of the house. Effendi is an old turkish term tacked on to names out of respect, usually reserved for government officials and fadl is an arabic name meaning generosity and grace.

61307

Unfortunately his beloved dog only lived four years and what I presume to be his tombstone is also on display in that room, it reads
Fadl
1354
to year
1358

(He used the islamic hijri calendar for some reason, he was not a muslim though)
61308

And then there was this working horse I saw while leaving the gayer anderson house. I think he may have been done work for the day as his owners presumably were just having a chat on the cart, which was empty.

You taking a pic of me??

61310

Doggeh seen at "il Misala il Na'asa" ..The Obelisk which is missing (something). Basically an Obelisk that was broken while in the quarry and so was just left there..I think lol. We didnt have a tour guide but I assumed and gathered that was what it was hahaha....
61311

Her pups :lovestruck: I couldve kicked myself for not having any food on me but they did not look hungry, just curious.

Not sure what this bird is called in English but known in Egypt as "sadeek il fallah" the friend of the farmer. Basically this bird sticks around when the water buffalo are stirring the earth through those rake contratption things (sorry I have no idea what the technical terms are) and eat up worms which are uncovered. I saw this when we were driving through farm land, was pretty cool but unfortunatley couldnt take out the cam fast enough.

61313

Then we have a random sheep seen on the side of the road while en route to the valley of the kings. I'm sure it belongs to somebody, but it was just doing its thing..

61314

Little boy at the statues at Memnon was trying to sell me trinkets..I didnt want anything but told him I would give him an egyptian pound if he would pose with the donkey another tourist was taking pictures with. Turned out it was his father's donkey.

and went back to training his foal, it was so cool watching them run along the bank.

61319

The man stopped training his foal to greet the farmer and his water buffalo who came out from the fields (at least i think thats what theyre called in english :o its a gamoosa in egyptian).

61320

Then the farmer led his hard working buffalo to the water for a drink

awwww, he's so FUZZY!!! :lovestruck::lovestruck::lovestruck:

I know right :lovestruck::lovestruck::lovestruck: I wonder if they shave his nose or its just naturally like that?? he was just so cute I wanted to take him home with me!!

....

and that's not all the animals I met, but just all those I managed to get pics of. And yes, sadly as you can see from the pics there is a lot of garbage along the banks of the nile *sigh*. Amm abdou told us that previously all the cruise boats just dumped their garbage straight in but now they are heavily penalized if they do.

That little donkey is adorable!

That one with the doggies at the obelisk is neat. I've seen that obelisk on one of the National Geograpic documentaries once. That thing is HUGE!

I love the photo of you with the elephant. I have to say, that must have been one huge towel! LOL, or did they use more than one?

Ohhhhh, that baby donkey is so adorable :cloud9: :lovestruck:

I was sad to see momma dog with her pups, where does she get food from? :(

The foal is beautiful too.

Yum, I love bananas. Are they much different getting them fresh, rather than shipped in from half way across the world as we do in Canada?

I actually was not sad to see these pups and their mom, theyre in a good location to be fed and such. I am sure they are fed by visitors throughout the day and the guards/staff who work day in and day out at these sites often become friends with the 'resident' animals, feeding them etc. Whenever the dogs/cats around a place are friendly its a good sign, it means people don't hit them or shoo them away :thumbs up

The egyptian bananas are smaller than the imported ones that we get in Canada and egypt too (in egypt we also get the dole brand u can find in stores here). Personally I like the smaller size, they seem more natural and they are sweeter too/ more banana-y ..if that makes sense lol. The egyptians who buy the imported bananas usually do so because the local ones go bad faster (but again thats because they are actually ripe)
