Depends who you ask  Being that my cat was recently diagnosed I've found alot of conflicting info.

The main points are- FIV is basically the same as HIV. It is found in a very small portion of domestic felines.

FeLV is alot more contagious and deadly. It's usually less common then FIV.

It's really hard to get proper information it seems. I'm still learning about it now after having found out Tessie had it. I thought I had all my facts down but apparently all vets have a different opinion on it.

According to one study done a few years ago, approximately 3-4% of owned and stray/feral cats are FIV positive. Here is a good article by Alley Cat Allies on the subject: http://www.alleycat.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=457
