New York cafe caters to kitties

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dressed in a tuxedo, Simba sat at the front of one of Manhattan's newest dining establishments and nodded at people who greeted him.

Then he yawned, began to roll on the floor and lick his paws.

That's acceptable behavior at the Meow Mix Cafe, a new eatery designed especially for cats and their human owners.

Simba, an 8-month-old kitten, was joined by about two dozen other tabbies, Persians and Burmese for a feast at Tuesday's grand opening of the cafe, which is owned by the Meow Mix Company, a Secaucus, New Jersey-based cat food maker.

"Why not take your cat out for dinner?" asked Simba's owner, Leah Thompson, 19. "There's always things for dogs, but never cats."

The midtown restaurant serves Meow Mix packets for its feline customers with corresponding dishes to satisfy human palates.

"Deep Sea Delight" mackerel for cats is paired with tuna rolls for cat owners; "Upstream Dream" salmon for felines corresponds with mini crab cakes for humans.

Meow Mix president and CEO Richard Thompson said the feline-friendly restaurant has two main rules: no dogs and no catnip, which must be checked at the door.

"Our goal is to keep cats happy," Thompson said. "The idea is that you can bring them and start socializing them."

I heard that they have a lot of things like this in Europe - mostly for dogs, though. As a result, they don't have as many problems with poorly socialized pets. Could any of our European friends confirm this for me? I would LOVE to be able to take my dog on more public outings. We can only stroll through the aisles of PetsMart so many times in a week!!

I've been to Germany. Dogs are allowed in many of the restaurants, usually the local Gasthaus is a very informal setting. Dogs are expected to lay quietly under the table and be leashed. They can also go into the department stores, but not on the escalators. I also saw dogs in department stores in Japan.

You might get your wish. I was reading more about this place. Apparently it's not permanent. It's a new marketing fad called "pop up retail" (or something like that). They stay there for a week or so, drum up lots of business, then go to a new location. They (the company) are also looking at creating a "rolling cafe" so they can tour the country. They may be coming soon to a parking lot near you - keep your eyes peeled! :D

psst, fyi: it's against the law to have NO PETS signs up in any non-food stores.
