Got a call about a poodle whose senior owners didn't want anymore so arranged to meet their daughter, picked-up Sandy, about 1/2 cup of dry food she was used to eating, a blanket and a kong. I asked where her papers were and daughter said she would have their vet fax them to my vet. Her collar has a 2008 vac. tag but haven't got any return calls from daughter after leaving 3 messages on cell and home phone. My vet can't get the file without previous owners requesting it faxed. Something is not right here and I would hate to have her re-vaccinated if she is up to date, plus would like to know of any other medical issues and her birth date, where she originally came from and if she's really spayed. Any ideas how I could get this sorted out?

Could it be that the daughter is away, and simply hasn't received your messages yet, or she is waiting for the vet to contact her back or something like that?
Do you know in which town/city the senior owners live? Could you contact the vets in that area, explaining the situation, give them the details, letting them make the decision whether to contact your vet or not? They can then call the previous owners at their own discretion and decide whether it's within their code of ethics to contact your vet.

If you can't get the paperwork, can you request a titer to check antibody levels? It wouldn't tell you her age or spay status, but it would give you some vaccination info.
:fingerscr that the daughter still comes through!

If she's a senior , I wouldn't get her vaccinated ... is this vet near you ? If you show up with the dog , they shouldn't deny you the file.
an ultrasound will tell if she's spayed.
wtf was their reason to abandon their loyal senior dog ? :frustrated: and thank YOU for taking her in ! :thumbs up

Thanks for all the suggestions. Sandy is from Petawawa and is apparently 3 yrs. old or so the daughter told me. I had to meet her in Renfrew to pick up Sandy and now am wondering if everything she told me is bull, don't understand why she won't return my calls unless she is hiding something or maybe the dog is stolen. Don't get it. Anyway am going to force the issue at my vets, surely they can convince the vets on her tags to send the file without previous owner's consent, since they are being so absent. Am not even sure if the tags she's wearing really belong to her! This little girl is just super, quiet, well mannered, gets along with all the others and loves to be cuddled. Her nails were really long and her ears are quite warm and she occasionally scratches them but I am slowly changing her diet to Origen and have added some oils as her coat was crispy - almost as though she was bathed in a crappy dish soap. I cleaned out the ears and removed the fur but no smell or infection so we'll see the vets next week whether they got her file or not - just for a general check-up and vaccs if needed.
