I just came up from the basement attempting to pick out goodies in the litter-boxes :D Stopped dead in my tracks by the sight of this HUGE centipede(think that's what they are),with my heart racing I ran back upstairs, sans goddies :D
There is nothing that gets to me like those things,I am terrified,I've been known to be a few meters away from one and throw a phone-book at them, the only surefire way to kill it.
I can live with spiders, mice and I catch flies to let them free, but these things with all their legs, just about give me a heartattack.
Oops, hubby is up,he's going to have to assassinate the monster, then I can go back downstairs safely :D
August 18th, 2004, 08:57 AM
Eeeeeeewwwwwww! I've always said, if it has more than 4 legs, it isn't welcome in my home. You waited for hubby to wake up on his own? You're braver than I. I would have been screaming in his ear to wake up - night shift or no night shift!!! :D
August 18th, 2004, 11:41 AM
Yeah they are pretty nasty. I've cut down on them from getting in my appartment by silicon sealing around the baseboards, but they sometime travel up through the pipes and come out the drains. You can leave the plugs in, but if you're anything like me, you'll forget to lol.
I have a footprint on my wall from turning around and stomping my foot to kill one (it was near my rabbits cages *sniff*). I'm not afraid to kill them myself, just as long as I get it within the first shot, and there's no chance of it moving when I pick it up with a paper towel.
Luckily the centepedes I get are nothing like the ones they sell in pet stores!
August 18th, 2004, 11:59 AM
that gives me chills up my spine! but i know my cat Trixy would be more than happy for a snack!! J/K i wont let her to anything icky like that!
August 18th, 2004, 12:30 PM
Oh my gosh I know I hate those things with a passion. And they DO bite too!
They give me the willies, I really don't like them...any insect/bug other then them I can deal with but not those buggers.
Seems like it takes a tank to destroy them, they keep coming back to live unless you squish them flat and keep squishing. UUUUHHHH!
It's the humidity from the rain lastnight Anita that brought them out!
August 18th, 2004, 03:27 PM
I hate those things...i was doing the dishes once and I had one crawl all the way up my arm, it came up from the drain in the sink...it was the grossest feeling...
August 18th, 2004, 03:38 PM
Wow,crawling up your arm,I would DIE!!
Luba,I know they come with the humidity and this summer I've seen lots of them. They are so darn quick, but Vinnie has managed to kill a few,Rocky and Chico won't go near them :D
I have an absolute, hysterical phobia about them,to my hubbys amusement :D
Once he got up,the monster was nowhere to be found, but I know he's there somewhere and I walk downstairs very carefully, one step at a time :D
Anyway,I am glad I am not the only one feeling this way,my husband read all of the posts, thinks we are all crazy :D
August 18th, 2004, 04:29 PM
CUTE? OMG you are nuts!!!
They're friggen nasty disgusting creepy crawling devil creatures from hell!!
August 18th, 2004, 09:25 PM
ROTFLMAOoooo good thing or u 'd be goin to the funny farm
August 18th, 2004, 09:43 PM
Ohhhh!!! I really do think they're cute! But I wouldn't feel that way if one was crawling up my arm... inchworms too, so adorable. Spiders, no. Cockroaches, absolutely not. Rats... depends on if they're clean and tame and someone's pet!!!
August 18th, 2004, 09:57 PM
I know these longlegged awful things are not called milipedes or centipedes,it's something else pedes  Regular centipedes outside don't scare me.....or caterpillars they are cute, unless they're eating my flowers
I was watching Canadian Idol and saw one running quickly,OMG can they run,Chico saw it too and went after it,but hubby had to kill it.....
He put it in the toalett, maybe the water will revive him and he'll visit me,while I'm doing my thing :D
August 18th, 2004, 09:57 PM
Sorry girls! Don't have em! :p But we do have Black Widow Spiders! And I understand we now have Brown Recluse Spiders now too, although I've never seen one.
August 18th, 2004, 10:10 PM
I hate them hate them hate them!!!
Genus and species: Scutigera coleoptrata (Linnaeus)
August 18th, 2004, 10:13 PM
Wow, that is gross. I was referring to the small legged ones, usually black. I don't like that little guy in the picture at all!!!!
August 18th, 2004, 10:32 PM
Oh Luba, just seeing the picture gives me goose-bumps
I don't have any pesticide in the house and if noone is home to kill them for me,I spray them stiff with hairspray,animal-cruelty
August 18th, 2004, 10:36 PM
I can't even look at them they're wiggly nasty bodies UUUUGHHH
I squished one in the bsmt one time and it kept crawling, squished it until it was in half it kept crawling, emptied half a can of carpet cleaner on it it kept crawling
OOOOHHHHH saw one in my closet a week ago, didn't go in there for several days. Good thing I had clothes in the drawers and in the laundry :D
August 19th, 2004, 12:58 AM
Yiiiiiickkkkk!!!! Man, I had one crawl up my leg while I was in the washroom "otherwise occupied".... now that is an uncomfortable situation! Especially when your first instinct is to run!!! Instead I screamed bloody murder and had hubby chase it! Men are handy for situations like that! :D
August 19th, 2004, 07:18 AM
Is this what you're looking for?
We hired a zoo-type show for my son's 5th b-day. They brought an assortment of critters - most of which I could put up with. BUT, when he whipped this one out, I just about scrambled up the curtains!
Changed the pic to give a bit more of a close-up...
August 19th, 2004, 07:29 AM
Hubby killed 3 of them yesterday all up-stairs,I think I am being invaded
The litterboxes and my laundry downstairs will have to wait until I get reinforcement :D
Thank's for the support girls,I thought I was the only one in the world absolutely terrified of these thingys :p
August 19th, 2004, 07:42 AM
I hate those things - we used to have them in the book shop I owned and they would crawl up the books and then vanish. It was in an old building, and I thought they just lived in old buildings - now I feel all creepy that they might be living in my house! We used to tell the shoopers that they were book worms - uggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
August 19th, 2004, 10:56 AM
W4F, that pix absolutely grossed me out!! Who posed for the shot?
August 19th, 2004, 11:00 AM
There were 10 kids, ranging in age from 5 to 12 yrs old, all clamoring for a chance to have this thing crawl on their hands! The kid in that actual shot was my friend's son (6 yrs old).
August 19th, 2004, 06:31 PM
They are the sweetest things. You guys are freaking out at nothing! Scared of a tiny thing the size of a worm? Are you nuts? Think of the things the centapeid thinks about you!
August 19th, 2004, 06:53 PM
I'll tell you what they're thinking. They're thinking "Hmmm. What a nice, fat tree to crawl up and start munching on." Provided they're thinking at all, what with brains the size of a grain of sand and having to keep track of all those creapy legs moving at the same time (shiver). Like I said - more than 4 legs, NOT welcome in my house!! :p
August 19th, 2004, 06:55 PM
The ones that we have are the ones that aren't like worms - more like long spiders with long legs and FEELERS -uggggggggggggg - they are disgusting. See picture on the plate above - YUK! Now I hear that Kincardine is also the center for termites - with those and the centerpedes - I think I am moving tot Barrie - I don't think the black flies can beat those. I am shivering all over just thinking about them
Bill & Bob
August 19th, 2004, 06:58 PM
Ok, I have a problem with whoever posted the pictures of them. I can't even bare to go back and look to see who it was. I hadn't seen those things in over ten years since I left Ontario and that picture just sent shivers up my spine. Those things move so fast it's terrifying.
I've always said that the world would be a better place without centipedes and skunks. Skunks are the only other animal other than centipedes that I'd personally like obliterated.
August 19th, 2004, 07:06 PM
Now I hear that Kincardine is also the center for termites - with those and the centerpedes - I think I am moving tot Barrie
Honey, we have our fair share of creepy crawlies in Barrie! This year has been exceptional for earwigs - all that rain! And apparently the Massassagua (sp?) Rattle Snake has been found as far south as Horseshoe Valley, and keep moving south each year. Oh, and don't have bonfires in the summer, 'cause the giant June Bugs just love to divebomb your head as you roast marshmallows!! Not to mention the dozens of Tarantulas (yes, Tarantulas) that come up with the produce every year and escape into the wild (ok, they die in the winter, but there are always more each spring!).
August 19th, 2004, 07:14 PM
((Guilty)) I posted the fugly pics LMAO
August 20th, 2004, 02:27 PM
But you still can't admit their cute? ;)
August 20th, 2004, 03:03 PM
Writing4fun - have dealt with Tarantulars in Singapore and in the West Indies - yuk - but I don't think they would run wild in the Barrie area, unless they escaped from a house (yes heard about that one :p ) My daughter has earwigs coming out of her basement in droves - and we have them here as well - don't mind them at all - but those long legged 4 to 6" things with all those legs and feelers........  Even my JR's wont take on those things. No, those above spiders are my downfall - there isn't anything cute about them when you can hear the boots marching and the teeth clacking and they are looking directley at you :( We still intend to move to the Barrie area next year - even with rattlers and June bugs etc.
August 20th, 2004, 03:06 PM
Let me know when you get here - we'll invite you to a bonfire. :D Just remember to wear a helmet!!
August 20th, 2004, 03:09 PM
:p I will - can I bring my pet Tarantular ? :D
August 20th, 2004, 03:10 PM
There are actually no bugs I even slightly react to like these House Centepedes,I've learned to live with spiders,I always think of Charlotte the spider :D even earwigs and anything else, but these guys turn me into a shivering big coward :D Vinnie will chase them and play like cats do and eventually kill them, but not eat them  Rocky and Chico stay away from them....and me,I'll be up on the table :D
I kind of like Tarantulas as long as they are not on me...
August 20th, 2004, 03:28 PM
lol....1 word...ok...change that... 2 words !!...lol : Spray Glue ! ;) ...then stomp the buggers !...can't run if'n ya can't move !!!....Hehehehehe
August 20th, 2004, 03:30 PM
spray glue  OMG thats different
August 20th, 2004, 03:37 PM
Since I don't have any spray-glue,hairspray works too, they get kind of stiff, then I throw the big phonebook on them, they won't know what hit them :D No animal-cruelty involved :D
August 20th, 2004, 03:41 PM
so much for em' phoning a friend...maybe if it's still breathing after the phone book it can try it's luck at 50-50 !!!...lol....hairspray....hmmmm....that will work...least it will be stylish before ya kill it !! :p
August 20th, 2004, 04:00 PM
I saw one on the kitchen floor once,he was drinkng water from a little spill on the floor,I let him have his drink, then I threw the book at him, while standing on a chair :D
Myster... :D :D :D
August 20th, 2004, 04:04 PM
:D :D :D You people slay me!! :D :D :D
August 20th, 2004, 04:15 PM
Well , they do say everyone deserves a last meal !!!...least he was full before being buried....so much for letting his little legs do the walking through the yellow pages...lol.....lmao @ chair shot .....you really got the drop on him didn't ya !!!...chicken !!!! :p ...lol :D :D :D
August 20th, 2004, 04:50 PM
Anita ur a riot!!!
August 20th, 2004, 08:17 PM
Careful he doesn't . . . reach out and touch someone!!!
Glad we missed out on these! :D
August 20th, 2004, 08:37 PM
August 20th, 2004, 09:18 PM
The centipedes we have here in New Mexico don't look like any of those photos. They aren't black and thick like that one wrapped around the boy's wrist, and they aren't anything at all like the ones Luba posted. They are kind of red and black and have shorter legs than Luba's- and they are loooong. Maybe they are millipedes and I'm just calling them the wrong thing.
Anyway one time I was getting ready to get into the shower, and I started pulling a clump of hair out of the drain, and then the "hair" curled back and bit me on the thumb!!!!!(felt like a sting). IT WAS ONE OF THOSE!!!! I drowned it in hairspray (that's all I had) and then called the nurse hotline at the hospital and asked if I should be worried, since they are poisonous. She said no, not enough poison to do me much harm.
I check the drain for movement before I go pulling out hair these days...
