Clipping my dog's nails?

Hello, this is my first post here :thumbs up I'm looking for some advice on clipping my dog's nails. A bit of background:

I have a 80 pound female Akita (3 1/2 years old) that we rescued two years ago from a very unkept shelter. Shes a wonderful dog though she wasn't house trained and didn't know any commands and unfortunately we know nothing of her history.

When we started out clipping her nails she did fine although it took a lot of peanut butter to divert her attention. Little by little she became more afraid (my mother who does the clipping part nipped her a few times) so we brought her to the vet to do it. First time at the vets was successful however the vet also nipped a nail (I hate hearing her squeal x.x) so when we returned a 2nd time she would have nothing of it.

The vet suggested we put her on 1 pill (i don't know how many mg) of Valium when we bring her in next. We were hesitant but tried it out and determined we never want to do it again (Akitas have very lose skin and with the valium relaxing her muscles her eye sockets and such would sag and she looked very sickly). Even on valium it took every single person in the vet office to hold her down and even still she fought them all. She left messes of both kinds all over the room and frothed at the mouth from her anxiety.

We've run out of ideas completely and don't know where to go next. Has anyone had this problem so extreme before? Any ideas at all? (We have though of trying the file method like the Peticure, any advice with that?)

Thank you for reading :dog:

How is she with you just touching her feet & nails without any clippers present?

I would start with a manual stainless steel nail file such as this one by Miller's Forge (http://www.entirelypets.com/mifopetnafi.html?__utma=1.361587122.1249535633.124 9535633.1249535633.1&__utmb=1&__utmc=1&__utmx=-&__utmz=1.1249535633.1.1.utmccn%3D(referral)%7Cutmc sr%3Dentirelypets.com%7Cutmcct%3D%2F%7Cutmcmd%3Dre ferral&__utmv=-&__utmk=133529231), I have this one myself used for a dog who was quite touchy about his feet. Once you get her used to her feet being handled and the nails being filed with no painful outcome, then you can consider either trying again with clippers or using an electric file as I hear some of those can be noisy and may make the dog nervous. I've not used any electric files so I can't comment on that but I'm sure someone who has will be along with some tips.

:goodvibes: good luck & welcome to pet.ca :D
