Oh for the love of God...why me???

Why do my cats do this to me?? why ??? Seriously my heart cant stand all this crazyness!!

Over the past maybe 2-3 days Onnie has been seemingly very interested in jumping onto the railing of the stairs. He will do the butt wiggle, adjustment..aim..and then on the last second he changes his mind (perhaps because im yelling Onnie nooooo in the backgrnd ). It all started when he climbed his first tree in the backyard. Now he thinks he's spider cat.

This morning my SIL told me my cat was actually on the railing, walking backwards. She almost had a heartattack.

Since then I have taken him off the railing twice and he's almost fallen twice (huge nail marks in the railings where he kinda lost balance). He keeps jumping up and while its kinda cool that he's so agile...it's also really scary. There are things he can impale himself on if he falls!! Bunduk used to jump on the railing but only on the side where the stairs are, so I didnt really mind to much..he wouldnt fall far if he fell. Plus, Onnie is a big cat...he has way more of him to keep stable :o. His 2nd last trapeze attempt he was walking along the part of the banister that goes against the wall (ie, its half the normal width). My heart was in my stomache.

Any ideas how to keep him off????? My SIL suggested putting double sided tape..but wouldnt that spook him after he's already jumped on?? thereby increasing his chances of falling?

btw..i have pics, courtesty of the little bro. I was in the sidelines but not wanting to just grab Onnie because Im afraid to spook him. When I do grab him I put my arm on the outside of the railing so even if he were to fall, God forbid, he would fall into me.

As you can see, he is very nonchalant about the whole thing.

Ok, the only solution I see is to sell your house immediately and move into a one story home. That is the only way you are going to save your cats from themselves!!

No idea what he's looking at.

Really its funny but its not and its cool but its not. The cincher. One of his attempts today included him chasing after a fly while on the banisters "look ma, 3 paws!!' - while swatting in the air and doing that chattering thing.

Soooo..any ideas??? or perhaps someone would like to trade for the non heart attack inducing model?

These are the things that have me worried (old pic)

Specifically the pointy things. these are just under the stairs..my mom wont move them. Im worried he might impale himself or something.

Is there any way you could put a small chair or an ottoman or something soft at the bottom of that area so if he does fall he would at least have somewhat of a soft landing? We all know it is next to impossible to stop kitties when they have their minds set on doing something.
On the other hand, Onnie is one handsome dude!! Great pics of him. :thumbs up

Oh darn, I didn't know there were pointy things right below. I'm sure if your mom saw what her favourite kitty was up to she would be willing to share that area with a soft chair. At least until he got over this new fixation.

Your Dad might not like this idea either :D...how about attaching some sort of strong netting to the banister (guess you'd have to attach it securely to the opposing walls too)? Or just a strong netting from the banister straight up to the ceiling? You can add sea shells and star fish and just tell him it's the latest in home decorating . I turn into a nervous wreck easily so I might consider the whole moving to a ranch style house too :D.

i dont know..i have to try and talk to her about it. I dont think she'll move it to be honest..tho when he has gone on the railing she has screamed at me to come save him. Its not that she doesnt care..she does of course. I did tell her "mama he's gonna kill himself on your things (the decor)" ..She said "Ill kill him if he breaks them" ...ummmmm yeaaaaaah. Obviously she's not serious..but my mom loves her stuff.

lol oh believe me I already know Im moving into a packing bubble with the cats as soon as I can!!! with extra foam around the edges just in case

Your idea is one that I thought of (wel ok minus the starfish and seashells..ill give u that :p).......then I remembered its not my home and isn't gonan fly :( My dad gets no say in home decor actually/...all my mom. Sigh.....I just have to get him to understand, banisters baaaaaad.

I was thinking getting some of that SSScat spray stuff and putting it near or a little bit ahead of where he jumps from, so that he cant get close enough to jump onto the banisters.....how does that sound to anyone?

 Great idea, LP! :thumbs up

Much better than madame hazel's--she was trying to make me suggest screwing a wider piece of plywood all along the rail top so the kitties would have a wider perch. :o It's a fashion that's all the rage among chic felines... :cat: But watch out for splinters

Yes, that orange thing in the middle worries me a little too and he doesn't actually live with me!

As for jumping on the railing...sticky tape? Perhaps your folks will let you temporarily move the stuff while you are training him with the sticky tape (he may jump over to that side when his feet hit the sticky)?

Actually, the new fella in the catuary looks like Onnie right down to the little white patch of fur. "Cept s/he's not so ummm, rotund. :o

That'll work! :thumbs up

I think the netting w/seashells is actually coming back into style now. Maybe you could convince your mom she would be starting a trend in the area.

I would just be concerned that if he was mid jump when the SSScat went off he would definitely lose his balance then.

Seems like my best option may just be pleading with my mom to pleaaaaaase remove the current decor just for a little bit. Maybe Ill buy her some nice oriental type cushions (saw some at a store) to put there instead for the time being....ill have to see what she says.

14+, new kitty? aack. i miss so much!! I really should read the board more :o Yeah, Onnie is just round. i dont know what to do, i try really! He gained a whole pound since last year  I recently took his weight to get him advantage. Bunduk stayed the same. Currently im trying to limit one treat per day (ive noticed that no1 keeps track of if they got treats that day..also bro and mom give them like 20 treats at a time!!! really! they just pour 'em on the floor :frustrated:). Hopefully it'll help. I feel like such a bad fur mom when i see his belly

tacogrl....lol yes, that orange thing worries me too. Seriously how did I end up with these 2 monkeys??? lol I specifically signed up for normal lap cat!! Honestly! lol

lol hazel u are too funny :p

So heres the plan. I meet mom with my proposal. In it I give her her many generous options to save her beloved kitty who depends on her for survival.

These options will be

1) attach large plywood
2) Move houses
3) update decor to seashell netting
4) 5)6)7)8) yet to be provided by pets.ca'ers

9) Temporarily move deadly decor

Given the deep thought that must have went into 'my' creative solutions, my mom will have no chance but to support me for a job well done. She will choose a solution and all will be well :D

Oh geezeee.. bad kitty!! I was getting the willies just looking at your pics! I'm scared of heights and just the pics were freaking me out.

Is there some way that u could buy a piced of wood and mount hook like things that would clip onto the banister so that the cats can sit on those? Like you know those window sill cat platform thingies?

Or put the sticky tape on the banisters and then hold the cat and put it's paw on the sticky tape just to show it was there? Maybe put a chair in front of the banister so the cat can jump on it and see the sticky tape before jumping on the railing?

It's too bad that the area down below didn't have a love seat there instead of the ornaments. Could u talk your mom into buying a love seat? :D And putting those other things in another area?

Or tell her moving furniture around is a good thing, it gives the carpets and floor a rest so they don't get dented and makes it look like you bought new furniture isntead of just put something else in that spot. :D:D

Just a thought!

I like the colorful oriental style cushions idea...just temporary training tools, of course. :D Who knows? Maybe Onnie will really love them and give up rail walking for cushion snoozing... :cloud9:

I remember coming upon this in my old home. I always used to worry they would fall but never did. (I took them down right after I took the picture. :o)

OMG,those boys:laughing::laughing:
Great pics by the way:thumbs up
Like 14+says,it's next to impossible to keep a cat from jumping, they seem to like the feel of looking down on the underlings(Bunduk)

My cats are always balancing on the pool/deck railing,of course, they would land on the grass, not pointy things.
The only option IMO,is to move those beautiful, but deadly pointy things..
My Chico is as agile as a Panther, but I always worry about my chub Vinnie in high places.
I think though, although it looks really dangerous,we under-estimate cats, they don't usually fall, but in this case with the pointy things,I would be a little worried.

Those boys are going to drive you insane.

Seriously though, I had that same fear before I moved into this place. Here's how I fixed my problem.

Not sure if that's an option your parents might consider.

Another idea is, have you tried that sticky tape people put on furniture? I don't know if it would damage the wood, but maybe Onnie won't like the sticky on his paws and it will discourage him.
