A 32-year-old Kent man was arrested Thursday night after he admitted throwing a seven-week-old puppy from the balcony of his third-floor apartment and killing it.
Police found the puppy lying on the ground about 20 feet out from the building.
The man admitted to officers that he threw the dog from the balcony after arguing with his girlfriend. But he didn't see the problem.
``What's the difference between that and if I shoot a bird?'' he told a police officer, according to the police report.
The man is being investigated for possible felony first-degree animal cruelty for killing the dog. On Friday, he appeared in Kent district court, where a judge set bail at $10,000 and gave police until Tuesday to file charges with the King County Prosecutor.
The man is being held at the Kent Correctional Facility.
A neighbor called police after he heard something crashing through the trees outside the apartment building and saw what looked like a puppy. He told police it was making a sound like a baby crying. He said the puppy yelped twice more and then didn't move.
Police said the man's girlfriend told them that they were having an argument and the puppy started barking at the yelling.
``You have to find a new home for your dog,'' she said he told her.
At that moment, she said, one of her three children came out of the bedroom door to find out if everything was okay. While she took the youngster back to bed, she said her boyfriend scooped up the dog and headed for the balcony.
She said she thought he had put the dog outside on the balcony.
Police said they had responded to that unit in the past for domestic disputes.
King County Animal Control took the dog's body and was planning to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
