It is 7 am, I hope you check in soon. This morning when I went out for my morning coffee I heard squealing on the other side of the pond. I saw a raccoon so I thought it was hurting a baby animal. As I ran over I realized it was a tiny baby raccoon in the water. Of course I screamed at the raccoon, not knowing it was her baby :wall: :loser: in the water and scared her away. The baby got out of the water and hid in the long grass The baby won't stop screaming. What should I do?????????????/

L4H I think the momma will come back...I would leave it for a bit and wait and see. Is the baby mobile?

I agree, momma raccoon isn't too far away, probably just waiting to make sure she's safe before coming to retrieve her baby.

Baby has calmed down. I kept lookout but didn't see momma, however the grass is very long so she could have. I will go back later this afternoon to take a peak.

What could she have been doing with her baby in the water?

The raccoon reminded me of a three week kitten just learning to walk, very slow and uncoordinated, it looked to be about 4 pounds or so. Cute as a button :cloud9:

Maybe the baby had fallen into the pond? Their soooo cute :cloud9: There are many families living at Angrignon Park where I go. During the day you can watch them all huddle sleeping together in the sewers and will hiss at you if you wake them up :)

I'd of gone myself had I heard the screaming, don't worry L4H's momma will be back

I'm sure the mom will come back for her baby L4H. :goodvibes:

if not , you can always foster him and make him think he's a kitty :D

I went back this afternoon to look for baby and there is no sign of it. Not sure what was happening because the baby was screeching in distress for quite a while before I went to investigate. Wonder if it went too far in the water and momma was getting it out .

More than likely the mom came back for her baby.
I used to get lots of Raccoons on my deck, since I was feeding them(no more).
One mom had 5 babies and accidentally left one behind when the were done,1/2 hour later she came back for her missing baby, giving him heck:laughing:
They are really good mothers,I am sure your baby is safe.

Hi
Maybe the momma was trying to teach the baby how to wash food. If I remember right racoons don't have saliva glands and that is why they are seen looking like they are washing their food. I could have remembered wrong though. Probably the little one didn't like the feel of the water.

I have never heard of raccoons washing their food since they are notorious for raiding garbage cans so I decided to google it .....

Hi
They don't really "wash" it, I think they need to get water on it, cause they don't have saliva to help them swallow, something like that.

I use to feed racoons at the cottage and they would take the food to the lake and stick it in the lake with their little hands. Very cute.

Thanks for posting that link, Rainbow. In the pond there are many frogs and small goldfish so maybe Little One was after a frog and got to far out into the water and needed momma's help. He/she was screaming pretty loudly so there was some distress.

I am soooo sorry I wasn't here for you, the mom will come and get her baby eventually, it could be even 12 hours later, baby raccoons are curious and mischievious and he could have been after a frog (they eat them) or just saw himself in the reflection. you did the right thing.
