Introducing the "highwire hen"

I don't know how she stayed there so long, but this hen seems to have pretty good balance. The ropes and twines at the back of the chicken coop and hay shed are to keep the horses from stealing hay out of the cracks and fighting over it.

Dru was very interested in seeing the chickens outside around the back of the coop for the first time. When he first saw them in the trees they caught him by surprise and he sounded the alarm. Then he just wanted to keep a close eye on them.

A very close eye. Maybe they're meant to be a head adornment?

Storm also kept careful watch. So serious and yet so silly with his ears turned back.

Flipped ears and chicken hats are the height of fashion, didn't you know?

Dru is growing up, but he's also still very puppy-ish in a lot of ways.

I love Dru's intense look!

So do the dogs get upset when chickens flap on their heads? :dog:

Not at all. Dru was going for a set of drumsticks  Not really, but he did want to get at their legs. Smart chicken figured the best way to get out of his way was to sit on his head :D I think what perturbs Storm the most is when they ignore his "eye". He says move and they ignore him so once in a while he'll get a bit rough with him and I have to rescue a chicken and carry her back into the coop before she looses too many feathers or ends up smushed into the mud. These chickens have all grown up with the dogs around so they know that the dogs are no real threat and mostly ignore them. And vice versa, all my dogs started going out into the coop doing chores with me when they were just a few months old. When I take out scraps for the chickens they and the dogs will "fight" over it. Sometimes a chicken will snatch something away just as a dog was about to pick it up, other times a dog takes something a chicken has it's eye on.
