Yesterday Annie and I were out for her evening walk, and were just about back home (almost on our lawn), when this old man walked by. I told Annie to come, but then the old man bent over and reached his hand out to pet her, and she started to bark at him! I am not sure if she did this because he looked "different", as he was hunched over and his hand was sort of curled up. Annie tends to bark at different things (strange noises, things that dont look right etc.). I also thought of the possibility that there was some "vibe" from this person that she didnt like. Anyway, I just want to know peoples opinions, and what I should hae done as far as training, I just pulled her away and into the house. Normally Annie LOVES people and thinks the entire world should pet her so I was a little shocked. I dont want this to become a permanent issue...Thanks everyone.

I think that pets can tell things about people that we can not. They say if dogs and children like you than you are okay. So I think dogs just know so it could have been that. Or the fact that it was getting late and he did not know the man. :D

Many small dogs (or any sized dog) may feel threatened by having a large stranger loom over them and reach down to them.
It's better for people to get closer to the dog's level and call them to come to them.

If your dog is acting aggressively in any manner DO NOT console, pet or egknowledge the reaction is a happy way at all!! This will tell her that she did something right!! I would strenly tell her no and make her sit. Next time have some treats on hand! If you see the gentleman, ginve him one to hand her. Ask him to kneel down and let her approach him. As Lucky said, dogs find it a threatening pose to lean over top of them, this can lead to an attack. Good luck, let us know who it goes!!
