Is there a maximum amount of kittens Mom can feed at once?

I've been posting quite a bit lately because while I have fostered kittens in the past, this is the first time I took on a pregnant mother and had kittens born in my house :) It seems like only four of them can eat at a time and then there is always one fighting for a spot. It never seems to be the same one and when I weigh them they all seem to be gaining weight. Is this normal? I am just wondering if there is anything I can or should do as the kittens are only 12 days right now but I would imagine that as they get bigger, it will get even harder for them to nurse all at once.

I believe they can nurse 8. Sweet Pea had 7 and they all grew at a healthy rate and all had their fav nipple :D.

they will probably be just fine, if there is only four and they are already 12 days and gaining weight then it means at some point all are getting what they need, it is normal for their to be squabbles for the prime spot, but one will fall asleep or be late next time and they will all get their turn. If they are all hydrated and gaining weight that is all that is important and you know that they are fine, good luck! Do you have pics of the little ones?

How many kittens are there?

A cat normally has 8 teats & can physically nurse 8 kittens at the same time, providing she has enough milk.

If they are gaining on average 10 grams a day, they are getting sufficient milk. Yes, there was initial fighting until they all got a nipple then they settled down.

My vet had recommended that Sweet Pea's kittens start on canned food mixed with kitten formula at 3.5 weeks to ensure they were getting enough calories. Kitten Wellness, canned is a great food for them.

I thought I had a pic of her nursing them all when there were about 6 weeks old, but I can't find it:frustrated:. It looked very strange as they were so big and Sweet Pea had to stretch out a lot so they would all fit.
