Cat chewing

My cat, Abu, has the strangest problem with chewing. Before I go any further, let me say the vet says his teeth are fine. Abu likes to chew on bra straps and shoelaces, but when I give him his own shoelaces, like hung on a door, or off a chair, he doesn't want them, only if they are on a pair of shoes. He ruined a few bras before I figured out to make sure to hang them until wash time, he'd dig through the laundry basket for them.

Recently, he also got into my rubber hair ties, thank God I caught him and got that back before he choked on it! Whenever I have caught him chewing on things before, I sprayed him, but that hair tie thing scared me a bit. I've always been so careful, but never would have thought about those hair ties. Any clue why he's doing this, and ways to stop it? It doesn't look like play to me.

One of my Devon Rex loves to chew up (& swallow!) shoelaces and elastics. She learned how to open a heavy sliding mirrored closet door, now we have to put a stick in it so she can't open it. I can't tell you how many shoelaces she's ruined, and it is a worry cause sometimes I see pieces of them in her feces. An intestinal blockage is not something I want to have to take her to a vet, so we have to be very careful about putting our shoes away so she can't get to them, and especially to put the stick in the track so she can't open the door. Why does she do it? I have no idea; she started it when she was 3 yrs. old. My other Devon has no interest at all in shoelaces or anything, other than his toys.

hmmm....my cat is a chewwer but hasnt moved on to bras yet, lol. Mostly anythig plastic/wood..or........anything really lol.

I was going to suggest bitter apple, but bitter apple on your chewlaces might not be so good. Especially if you then tie your laces and then somehow get ure fingers to ure mouth, lol.

Have you tried getting him soemthing else he can chew on? Like a puppy kong? my kitty likes to chew on his and sometimes I jsut give him that when he's chewing (they dnt make a kitty one anymore).

Could it be he is after the salt from your body?

Only his own shoelaces, so far, but it didn't work. He really has never been much into toys. Can't tell you how many I bought him, that he never messes with. I did have to put a hook and eye lock on the closet door too, up high.
