Sad day for one of my friends

A girlfriend of mine found out her 10-year-old rotti has cancer. A mass in his abdomen and tumor in his lungs. The vet said they can't operate and chemo wouldn't really offer anything as it is advanced. He has lost 20lbs in the last couple weeks and she is so sad.

I was always slightly on edge when around the REALLY big dogs until I met Adelard. He is (was) 120lbs of pure sweetness. Adelard would never hurt one of his stuffies. He washes them and carries them around. Before bed he alway goes and selects one to sleep with. :lovestruck:

About a year and a half ago my friend and her hubby had a baby. She wasn't sure how Adelard would take to the child. Well, as you can see by the pictures below, she needn't have worried. Their son, she swears, loves the dog more than he loves them. :p The first thing he does in the morning is say, "Air's Addy?" He'll scream and giggle for him until he comes. She is now devasted to probably be losing her "first" boy and also having to explain to her son why he has gone away.

I'm so sorry, Dracko. Cancer sucks, human or canine (I've had/have family go through both, succesfully and unsuccesfully). My condolences to your friend's family. We've gone through it with Grace (losing a pet), and it's never easy. We're still answering questions.

I am very sorry to hear about Addy. :grouphug:

Cancer sucks. :yell: Do they have him on a raw diet or else a grain free kibble? It is the best diet to feed as cancer thrives on carbohydrates.

Yup, he's on a raw food diet. :thumbs up

I am so sorry to hear this. Just a question, now he is in pain, I hope they are no longer allowing the child too close. Rotties are very stoic, and may lash out because of pain.

Send them my good vibes, and condolences when it is time

What a terrible situation. That last picture is so lovely, the smile on Adelard's face while playing with the baby.

I wish a cure for this disease could be found before many more innocent loved ones die from this.

I'm so sorry for your friends , I know first hand how hard it is to loose a pet to this terrible disease. I also lost too many people to this.

I did ask her this, too. She said thus far he appears to be in no pain. They did discuss it with the vet and are watching closely.

I am sorry if it came out a little harsh, it was not meant to. I just pictured the poor guy with the kid on top of him in his condition, and was worried for him, and the child.
I am really sorry for what they are going through, Cancer is very hard on dogs as it is on people.

Aw.. this brought a tear to my eye. I have a soft spot for Rotties, they are so goofy, and gentle. Addy looks like a sweetheart. My condolences.

Oh you didn't. I knew why you said what you did. It came to my mind, too, after she mentioned his illness. If animals are in pain they certainly are going to react and can lash out as a natural instinct.

Just wanted to mention too what another friend told me to suggest to my friend to help her son through this. She said to get a stuffed animal that resembles Adelard for the son to have when he passes. They did this for their girls when their dog died and the girls used to talk to the stuffie and they told them that the dog left it behind to look over them.

Sad to say Adelard will be euthanized tomorrow at 11am (BC time). He has deteriorated over the last few days and isn't able to walk now. The vet is coming to their house.

My friend messaged me today and said: "Every piece of me loves Adelard."

I came home to this email tonight:

Dear friends and family,

The week prior to Thanksgiving I took Adelard into the vet, as it was apparent he had lost a tremendous amont of weight and did not look well. After a round of bloodwork and then x-rays, it was determined that Adelard had advanced cancer in his lungs and abdomen, as well as fluid around his heart. Chris and I spent the next week and a half hand feeding him, taking him on short walks that he could manage, and loving him as best we could. This past weekend Adelard deteriorated even more - the cancer began to affect him neurologically and as a result he was becoming paralzyed on the right side and could barely walk for a minute before collapsing. Adelard would hardly lift his head anymore and take any food, so Chris and I made the painful decision to put him to sleep, not before giving him a couple days of anti-inflammatory drugs to bring him back to his old self again, at least in spirit if not in body. Last night we had family over to say their goodbyes, and today we spent the morning with Adelard, driving and then carrying him into the nearby orchard for his last "walk", which consisted mostly of him sitting and munching on grass, as well as feeding him tastey treats, making him comfortable and telling him how special he was to us. We had two lovely women come from the vet clinic to the house, and Adelard died quietly with Chris and I by his side, on our bed. We love him and miss him desperately, and know that there will never be another dog like him. The house is already quiet and painfully empty without him, and we worry how Jacob will express the loss of Adelard (Ongong), his big brother and best buddy.

Thank-you to all who cared about Adelard and supported both him and us in so many different ways - visits, walks, pee breaks as a pup, money that was contributed towards his expensive TPLO surgeries, and more. We know his absence will be felt beyond these walls.

Saying a heartbreaking goodbye to my first baby...

I bawled too. It's amazing how so many animals are abused and neglected yet others are so loved. Addy was her 120lb baby even after she had her own child.
