We've had Ozzy for two weeks - he's 16-wks-old and a cocker/lab cross. We saw the vet the other day and he agreed with us feeding him twice a day. But I didn't ask if it mattered what time. Because of our schedules, we feed Ozzy between 10am - 11am and then again between 6pm - 7pm.
Let me know what you think. The reason I'm asking is because Ozzy loves food and gets excited anytime we go in the kitchen cuz he thinks he's being fed. How do I distinguish between when he is genuinely hungry/ready to eat and the typical lab "I'll-eat-anything-in-sight" behavior? I wonder if waiting until 10am - 11am is too late for him. We get up at 6:30am.

Now this is just me,but I would go with 7:30-8
I'm sure when you get up you take him out to do his buisness. When you bring him in,that time would be a good one to feed him.His last feeding is 6-7,so I am sure he would be pretty hungry when he gets up.I also find sometimes when a pup/dog is overly hingry, this is when they wolf their food down. But when you break the feeding down, they seem to slow down.Just something I have noticed.
Do you just feed dry?
My guy gets both canned and dry.He gets a can for breakie(which fills him up).He has his dry left out(he has never been a hoover.he just nibbles)and a can for dinner. He is not overweight either.:)..

I agree with feeding him earlier in the morning....as long as he is not exercising too much afterwards on a full belly.
I think he will be much more settled that way.

Our boys are fed at 7am and then between 6:00 or 6:30 pm...
I guess it all depends on what kinda of schedule you keep your dogs on...
Our boys KNOW when its dinner time, and if we wait two mins later than 6:30 they bring their food bowls out to the liivng room and start playing with them!

We get up at 6:30 for him to do his business and then it's back to bed for him. We feed him between 10am - 11am, as this is usually when he gets up for the day (besides more naps). This time also works best for our schedules right now...
Then we feed him supper between 6pm and 7pm. I could feed him later, this is just when we eat and then he gets antsy to eat.
Of course, being part Lab, he is always looking for food. I think I could feed him the entire bag and he'd still respond to a treat.
I thought I read another poster that said they feed their dog as late in the evening as possible so they don't have to eliminate so early in the morning? Is this true? Cuz sometimes Ozzy is up whining at 5:30am to go #2.
