So Winston has been on Orijen fish now for 1 year...In addition to his kibble he also gets herring oil on it a few times per week...Sometimes its the 100 % pure coconut oil depending on what I grab first. We have no problems with the food and actually am very pleased with it.
My concerns is the condition of his coat. From overall appearance it looks nice! but he has a huge amount of dandruff. Now he has always had a bit but it is much more obvious to me. I would have thought with the amount of oils he is getting I would have a nice shiney healthy coat without dandruff?
Am I missing something? I was considering a food change but he is really good on the Orijen??

My lab is 14 so her coat is not great.....but I know of another Lab who gets a sardine a day to keep his coat nice.

I would definitely keep him on orijen especially if he is doing well on it. Have your tried the adult fish variety of orijen? If not it may be worth to give a try since it is richer in your essentail fatty acids therefore in return helping the coat. Another thing you could try is to give your puppy the oil every single day. I give my dog flaxseed oil every single day and it has improved her coat by 100%. Good luck:thumbs up

I would increase the amount of fish oil you are giving Winston. I give my dogs salmon oil every day with both their morning and evening meals.
Since you are presently giving fish oil a few times a week I would increase to once a day at first then slowly increase to twice a day. If you increase too fast he may get diarrhea. If that happens just cut back then increase the amount at a slower rate.

This is from the b-naturals website....
One 180 EPA/120 DHA capsule salmon oil per 20-30 lbs of body weight daily.
My lab weighs 90 lb. but if I try giving him 3 capsules a day he gets diarrhea so I just keep him at 2 capsules. He doesn't have a dandruff issue though.

Another thing (if you didn't already know) is that when you supplement with any fish oil you have to also give your dog Vitamin E as fish oil depletes the body of it.
I give my dogs a 400 IU capsule of Vitamin E three days a week with their evening meal. Some brands of fish oil do include Vitamin E so check the label first.
