Back to business for Keeper

Heavy frost yesterday morning at Abby & Keeper's place and big time snow in the mountains nearby.

Last week Keeper had a mass removed from her throat/chest area so she's had some enforced quiet time (biopsy results tomorrow or Friday), until Monday when she got to go for a leisurely walk in the Foothills of the Rockies!!

Gorge walking!!

Below, Keeper and Abby on the move above the Sheep River gorge . . . . Keeper has my red throat warmer on, fixing her collar above her stitches.

Below, A cool but dry summer gave way to rain, letting Rick test out his new gaiters in wet conditions, trying to catch up to Keeper above him . . . only a month to Kilimanjaro!!

Below, Keeper and Abby eye a copse of trees suspiciously . . . . there have been several cougar encounters in this area the last few years, including our own "apparent" cougar encounter two Springs ago just down the road.

Below, "How do we get down there?" Answer: follow the cow trails. Cows always know where they're going. Aside from being in Kananaskis Country park, this is also grazing land on the eastern slopes of the Rockies.

Below, obligatory photo of Keeper lounging in the river, even though this was a pretty cool day, only about 7 celcius. If every day could be a cool Fall day, Keeper would be very happy. Her energy level was quite high after suffering through the summer.

Below, Abby pauses to sniff the air on the way back along a cattle trail . . . .

The scenery might remind you of the CBC series, "Heartland," which is filmed in this area.

As Keeper improves, we'll resume some mountain trekking.

Yes, off to Tanzania late this month, walking up Kilimanjaro (19,340 feet) in the first two weeks of October. I'll meet my wife in Amsterdam on the way back and I'll run the ING Amsterdam half-marathon the last day we're there.

Should be interesting experiences all around.

A few more . . . . . below, Keeper on the run, the new snow on the Rockies behind her. This is west of Turner Valley, past Sandy McNabb but before Bluerock. There are often Big Horn sheep nestled here.

Below, looming winter is coming down the mountain . . . .

Below, Skyler on a rainy early evening . . . .

Below, Polly, at sunrise. Polly has only her two front feet and can only go outside with constant human supervision. But she catches mice sometimes and is a danger around birds, which we keep an eye on.

Great shots esp Keeper in the stream, Abby sniffin out the cattle trails & the Keeper on the run :lovestruck: :lovestruck:

Is one usually in the lead or do they trade off depending on the weather & terrain?

Unfortunately, not good news for Keeper

It turns out our vet had removed a Grade 2 Mast Cell tumour - sarcoma, skin cancer.

Our vet had taken out a 3 cm margin - basically 1.5 cm on each side of the lump - but the margins are "dirty," meaning the cancer had been spreading.

Next step is an operation Sept 24 by a cancer specialist in Calgary to remove Keeper's lymph nodes. Another biopsy of those, then we'll see where she's at.

If the lymph nodes are also cancer-ridden, then that's obviously worse news. It'll be chemo for her in that circumstance.

Our vet says that if it's only the Grade 2 lump AND lymph nodes are not contaminated, 44% of canines still live at least another four years.

So, not totally devastating, but, leaning that way. Not anything you want to hear but not the worst we could have heard either.

Obviously, a sad day for Keeper.

At 10 years of age, she's entering the zone of when poop would statistically start to happen . . . and it has.

Wish her the best.

Keeper, a few days ago, coming home on one of the trails she and Abby have spent their lives cutting through the lawn . . .

Awwww Rick. You have our best wishes for a good surgery result on the 2th. Keeper is such a gorgeous pup. I sincerely hope she comes through surgery with flying colours and biopsy is the second option. You can deal with another four years. Lots of :goodvibes: :fingerscr:s :pray:s from here.
