My poor cat was treated for ear mites and fleas back in December for ear mites and fleas with Revolution, the liquid you put in the back of their heads. Since then all has been fine until a couple weeks ago he had a big chunk of dark wax come out of his ear. Since then his ear has been constantly dirty. I have been giving him ear drops every couple of days to help keep any other wax in there to soften and come out, but I'm wondering if he had some ear mite eggs stuck under that chunk that may have now hatched? Does anybody know if that's possible?
I called my vet and they didn't know either, but it's only happening in the one ear that the wax came out of. His other ear is fine and none of his 3 brothers are having any signs either!

Hi! Are you sure it was wax that came out? Ear mite poop looks like dark coffee grounds. When you treat your cat, you should treat them all, so as it doesn't pass back and forth. Or, it could be a yeast type of infection, that is what my Maya suffers from frequently and only in one ear. I have been told you can flush the ear safely with apple cider vinegar diluted 50/50 with water and squeeze a vitamin E gel tablet into the mix, still, visit the vet because you don't want it to get out of hand and do serious damage. Good luck.

Hi there. I have a cat with ear problems as well. If you click the link above, you can check out my recent thread about it. Maybe that can help you! Some cats become prone to ear problems long after the mites are gone. Your cat VERY likely has the exact same problem as my cat! There is not much you can do about it other then clean and use an ear wash that dries up the wash so the ears don't get clogged.

I thought it was wax. It was a bit bigger than a cooked grain of rice. Everything that has come out of his ear has been soft and waxy, not really the coffee grounds looking stuff that is described. The ear drops I have been giving him are made up of Aloe and lanolin, but I'm going to try the vinegar and water.
When he had ear mites before, all the cats were treated, and of course they had fleas at the same time. But only the youngest 2 had ear mites as well.

UPDATE
I didn't take him to the vet, cause I called and they said they didn't think it was possible for ear mites to live under a ball of wax, so I just kept cleaning it with Q-tips and giving him some general ear drops and it's much better now. I still clean it about once a week and it only takes about 2 Q-tips instead of 12 like before. :cat:
