Cat Fracture

My cat has a complete and slightly dislocated lower leg fracture that she got while jumping on something indoors. She's just had orthopedic surgery and they put two metal things in her leg.

The vet told me the most important thing is that she doesn't move it afterwards, that's what makes all the difference. However, she's pretty tough, and won't be happy about the cast or about being stuck in a cage most of the time (she's already managed to tear her first cast/bandage off). Anyone ever deal with this type of surgery? Any tips on how to calm her down and make sure her recovery is as easy as possible?

Also, I'm worried about the surgery not working and that she still won't be able to walk. Just looking for people that have been through something similar to tell me how their cat is doing now!

Tough or not, for the health and comfort of your cat you MUST confine her to a crate as recommended. Messing around with a serious break could mean weeks or months of pain, extra procedures, or complications if the break is re-injured. It will suck, for her and for you, but it is short term pain for long term gain.

I had to crate my 6 month old puppy for two weeks (23 hours a day) after she had her front leg amputated. Easy? No. Fun? No. Worth it? Yes, she recovered quickly.

I had a cat, Tiger, many moons ago who broke one of her back legs when she fell off of our neighbour's fence. They put a florescent orange cast on her, and we kept her confined in a cage. She didn't like it, but I'll let you know that she fully recovered and was back to her old sassy self in no time.

To make things a little easier for her we would sit with her next to the cage and speak soothingly to her. We gave her treats and just tried to do what we could to make her comfortable - she was a cuddle freak, so we did our best to pet her until finally she had had enough! :)

She'll probably get used to the crate after awhile - Tiger did, and she was an outdoor roamer. I agree that you might need a cone if she's biting off her cast.

Just curious....we've not been able to keep a cone or soft-e-collar on one of our cats. The vet calls him "Houdini".....:sad:

Hope your kitty recovers quickly and as everyone said, crating her is the best thing you can do for her under the circumstances.....Hang in there!!!
