A Montreal student found living in squalor with more than 70 sick and dead animals will likely not face any criminal charges, police said.

Authorities raided the man's foul-smelling Melrose Street apartment Monday, where they discovered more than 20 sick cats and dozens of frozen cat, pigeon and squirrel carcasses stashed away in the freezer.

Police said the two-bedroom apartment in Notre Dame de Grace was filthy, with feces smeared on the walls and floor and furniture crammed into every corner.

The man was taken to hospital for observation and released.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals (SPCA) carted away the 20 living cats. They are now being treated at the organization's headquarters on Jean-Talon Boulevard. A spokesman for the group said the raid was one of the worst cases he'd ever seen.

Davan Roberge, who lives below the man, was upset by the discovery but hoped his neighbour gets help "that he deserves to get," he told CBC News. "I believe the place should be cleaned out. There is a freezer full of carcasses, and the owners have to pay to get it cleaned.

There have been several missing cats reported in the area but it's not clear whether they ended up in the apartment. Some of the carcasses were frozen into solid blocks and it is difficult to distinguish the animals, said the SPCA.

The man moved into the upper duplex apartment in July 2006.

The guy has now returned home. I guess he's not a danger to himself or others; animals are excluded . From the report I heard on the radio, the SPCA has little hope that the prosecutor will file charges. There should be a law at the municipal level which would forbid this man to start accumulating again, if it has been determined by the SPCA that abuse has taken place. Give the SPCA the authority and have some kind of independent appeal process to satisfy the lily-livered.
I have high tolerance for people who want to live any which way they please, but his life as a 'pet owner' should be OVER.
I'm so sick of reading these stories.
