I absolutely love rats - I have 10 of them at the moment. 8 girls who are all related and live together, and two boys who are separate from them for obvious reasons.

Decided it was time I got some new photos of the girl rats. They are all still as hyper and active as ever - never seems to change! I have too many photos to post, so the rest can be seen here: http://flickr.com/photos/15508037@N05/sets/72157606458732990/

These are some of my favorites though.

Thanks, my girls are such hams

Rats are definitely quite intelligent - they also come to me when I call using squeaky noises (because trying to teach 10 rats their names individually would be extremely difficult!)

They just love people and are always happy when you come into the room. They are spoiled, living in their ferret nation - but even then that cage seems small to me sometimes! Maybe an entire room to themselves would do the trick... Lol

I love rats, they are awesome pets, but unfortunately were another subject to human stupidity and were/are so poorly bred that they are prone to a huge array of health problems, with the average lifespan being 18 - 24 months around here. Thats the only reason I'm reluctant to get more rats in the future - their health is just so bad that they cost more than the dogs in vet bills.

But on a happy note, 9 out of 10 of my rats are very healthy right now, and my one boy has made it past 2 years of age making him a golden age seniour

We had a rat living under my front deck for a while.... it seemed odd to me out here in the country... but he wasn't much of a bother and he certainly kept our cats and dog entertained! (all were scared silly to go near it)

your bunch is totally cute!

They're so adorable! I was watching pet finder on Animal Planet once and they helped a family adopt some rats, but they showed two different types. One type had big ears and another smaller ears. They were both super cute!

That's too bad about their life-span. I'd be reluctant to get more in the future too.

Lol Frenchy :D

I know a lot of people have issues with rodents - many of my co-workers and people from past animal related jobs/school (vet clinic, vet tech) couldn't even think about a rat being near them. Out of all the people I've met in those fields, only a small fraction like rodents. I grew up with them since I was a kid so it only feels natural to me to have them around.

Thanks for the comments, I enjoy reading them after a day of work!

I did have a pet rat when I was a teen, saved him from being eaten by a friend's pet snake. Once I put him back in his cage and his paw got caught in the door , he always hated me and bit me from then on.Then my mom came back from being away all summer (at the cottage) and made me give him up.

Now , if I see or hear a tiny mouse (I live in the country) my blood freezes ...they move too quick and it startles me.

I once lived in a very bad apartment with a very bad landlord in Toronto...ended up with an absolute infestation of mice. They were little smartypants too - could clean all the oatmeal/peanut butter goo out of all my live traps and then helped each other get away. I was considering forming an army with them and ordering them to do my bidding :D

Your rats are much cuter than my mice were....maybe because they don't poop on your nightstand and invade your cupboards.

Frenchy has a really huge broom Spatx

Cute little buggars. Is that a litter box, if so I didn't realize you could litter train them.

My friends always tell me I should train my rats to do my bidding and create my own little army  I'm not sure what I would do with an army of rats... go terrorizing? raid a candy store? maybe train them to do my chores? lol

Rats can indeed be litter trained :D My girls have a couple of litter pans on different levels in their cage and they all use them. Makes cleaning much easier, that's for sure!

They are cute indeed, but not for me either. A work aquaintance of mine has pet rats also, and on occasion would bring one to work if it was sick and needed full time care. I really don't mind the domesticated ones at all, just the wild ones I'm not too fond of.

LOL....why not? My mice were very effective guards, and kept all unwelcome guests out of my apartment. Actually they kept most of the welcome ones out too....I didn't have many visitors that year

My thoughts exactly. :D

Those ones are really cute :lovestruck: but I don't think I could have them crawling on me. :o
