dry patch of rough hair on dogs tail

just noticed this while i was brushing cash.

midway down his tail there is a VERY rough/brittle patch of hair. the hair is also shorter in length.

he walks with his tail curled up over his back a lot, as mals tend to do, so im not sure if thats contributing or not.

if necessary i will take him to the vet of course, but i was wondering if anyone knew what this was.

it was tender to the touch, i tried to brush through it a few times but he jumped and got startled so i just tried touching/examining it. he was very on edge when i was brushing/touching that part of his tail.

any ideas?

would a picture help?

My golden has that on his tail also.

The vet told me that it was caused by some kind of trauma to the tail. It has looked like this for over 6 months now. However it is not tender to the touch. That would have me worried.

Is it a lump or just the hair being an issue...I know you said its tender but that could be from brushing it?

i didnt feel any lump, but i couldnt really push on it...i will check again later on.

it was like that BEFORE i started brushing, my bad for not clarifying.

i saw it as i was brushing the base of his tail (i rarely brush his tail...dont see a real need) and then i tried to comb it out, thinking it was just dead hair or something.

now that i think abotu it i have seen him chewing that spot on his tail before.....

i think its vet time in the new town, time to do some research.
