New editions to my Feral Colony....

July 26th, 2008, 10:56 AM
Sorry I haven't been around much I started my own IT Consulting company and have been a little overwhelmed now onto the colony...
When I started feeding Nosey last Fall I got a rescue person to come in and TNR as many as we could catch (We caught 4 females) we couldn't catch Footy she was very, very skittish and actually rarely came around back then. Well she showed up about 6 weeks ago again and she looked quite heavy and yes she was preggers. She apparently had 2 kittens...JJ (For Junior Junior because I am pretty sure I know who the father is) and Feets Footy's daughter (I think she is a she). JJ is pretty brave he comes within about 3-4 feet of me but Feets is about the biggest scaredy cat (Pun intended) I have ever seen she is even afraid of the other colony members and she looks skinny too. I was only seeing her about twice a week but she has come around the past three days. I have another rescue person coming to help me trap Footy, JJ, Feets (I hope), Junior and possibly the other two rarely seen males Stashy & Yoda tomorrow (Sunday evening). I will post back after we hopefully catch them tomorrow night. But for now here are some new pics of the colony members sadly I don't have any of Feets but I'll get some I hope soon. She looks so SAD and she is so afraid of everything it breaks my heart. Bamba (my indoor female) was a rescued cat and for the first 5 years we had her I called her quarter cat because I only saw her a quarter of the time but she has come around to almost be a PITA!:thumbs up
So here we go...
Footy (Momma) and her new son (I think he is a he) JJ...

Nosey (aka Momma the one that started it all) and her daughter and the late Tigga's sister Troubsy...

And finally what I think is a great shot of Troubsy and JJ doing what he does best pigging out....

Aww Bill - JJ is so cute! :cloud9: Thank you again for all you do for these guys. You are an !

When the rescue person comes does she leave the trap or take it with her? Does she only spend a few hours with you? I think you would have more success if the trap was left behind. I have a couple of wiley ones too. It's hard to catch cats who have been caught before in traps and released. They won't go back in. :fingerscr and good luck!!!

Oh, and congrats on the consulting company getting off the ground!! :goodvibes:

Wow, sounds like you're doing some larger volume feral-trapping intermittently; great to have the help of a TNR-er :thumbs up. So nice to have a good resource person right on the spot! 14+ and I are about to become sorta-neighbours, so we are looking forward to watching each other's backs, so to speak :D.

Sweet pics, and good organization/logistics/planning stuff re: the trapping. I tend to get a tad stressed pre-trap-setting, i.e. have to psych myself up...or should I say DOWN . It's a definite 'mission' kind of thing; I imagine military-or IT!-expertise/experience would be an asset.

Good on you for being a bona-fide, card-carrying Feral Carer , and good luck with the next round. I've been able to livetrap about half the ferals I've nabbed; with the other half I've had to spend a bit more time investing in quality 'tuna time', and gradually luring the cats/kittens into our back porch (the trick is to get them in far enough-and accustomed to my 'few feet away' presence-then getting the door shut PRONTO).

Again, back-pats for your feral :cat: assistance and caring...pretty good for a techie!!

Well we had to postpone the TNR'ing because it was raining cats and dogs yesterday (Pun intended once again). We will resume operation "Catch da Cats" next weekend and I will post the results.
I do have one issue though Feets the new kitten is very, very skittish any tips to get her used to me???? She is even afraid of the other cats...Very scared and pretty skinny too she breaks my heart when I see how scared she is.

Feets the Skitty could be a challenge for you. She sounds like she is in desparate need of being an indoor kitty and having some of your undivided love. I know that you have a new business you are just getting off the ground and you also have other indoor kitties. Is there any way you could find a room for her?
As for catching her, your rescue person should be able to give you lots of ideas. If she is that skittish she may be one where you need to have a trap left behind with tuna left inside to lure her. I can't see her being willlingly trapped. Poor sweetie.
I hope and pray that you will be able to catch all of your ferals and get them fixed. God Bless you for all you do for your babies. :cloud9: :highfive:

Sorry, no magic advice re: Feet's wariness etc., but as usual 14+ has good suggestions. The REALLY skittish ones are a real challenge :frustrated: ; it took me almost a year to gain the trust of one male...he was a kitten when I first tried to trap him, and a young adult by the time I nabbed him(he was a porch nab, as opposed to livetrap). Now, he is the one cat that comes in the porch at every opportunity :lovestruck: ; he's hard to get out! So ya never know...best of luck with the trapping when the weather is better, and thanks again for all your caring and work! :thumbs up

:goodvibes: :fingerscr Good luck w/the cat nabbing I hope you can get most of them in 1 go especially the more skittish ones so they don't wise up to the trap quickly :goodvibes:

They all look great :thumbs up wonderfully cared for :grouphug:

Congrats on the new business :goodvibes: :highfive:

Thank you for taking care of these little guys. You are doing great work.

you also have other indoor kitties. Is there any way you could find a room for her?

I have to disagree with you. My first thing I would do is take the cats to a vet. By bringing in a stray cat, you are posing dangers/illness's to your indoor cat.

1) what if this feral cat acciently got out of the room and fought with the indoor cats. You do not know what diseases these feral cats are carrying and could pass onto the indoor cats.

2) Illness's: Alot of feral cats carry illness's that can be passed onto other cats. There are alot of airborne diseases's that they can pass onto other cats. Ie. upper respiratory.

3) Fleas/ticks: Usually feral cats have fleas and or ticks.

4) Zoonotic dieases: Some animals care Zoonotic diseases. Which means that animals can pass diseases onto humans. By not have the feral cats, examined by a vet first...you are taking the chance of possibly getting one.

I won't even put a shelter cat in my truck at work with a stray. I don't know what this cat has. yes, they are in different cages.. but this stray cat might have some airborne disease that could pass onto the shelter cat. And I don't want to take that chance.

ACO22 - I don't think at any time I said anything about him not taking the kitten to the vet. I didn't go into detail about that because I know Bill ITPro has been around cats long enough to use his common sense and take the kitten to a vet before possible exposure to his domestic cats.

Bill, your new additions are lovely. I do hope you can find room for Feets. It's hard to see strays all over, but it's heartbreaking when you see one that's so skittish like that and thin.

And yet a few more pics and I would take her in but Woogie my big beast is already depressed over the fact I go outside and sit with them. The vet told us he is way too affectionate to share the house with anyone besides Bamba (The black cat we got from a rescue shelter about 9 years ago) and they have been together since but he doesn't let her be with us for too long and then he chases her. I will try to get her adopted out...She is a little better because now I actually have a picture!!!
Here is Muggles my stalker she showed up in the early Spring and she has no tail, about 1 tooth (I took her to the vet and spent money we don't have but wtf it's good Karma!) and she has Bartonella and we have been giving her Zithromax and she has also has eye infections for years and her third eye lid's are raised but let me tell you she is nothing but a ball of love...She just wants to sit with me and rub on me...It's a true gift and makes me smile every single time I see her. Well here she is enjoying some "Nippy"

Well Kitties 1 Humans 0 in the Catch A Kittie contest.....
The rescue woman came this evening and we didn't catch any we came very, very close to getting Footy she was IN THE TRAP but she didn't trip it!!!! And Junior ran away as soon as we started setting the traps and JJ & Feets walked around and around but no go. She is coming back tomorrow afternoon and I am under strict orders not to feed them so I will have to close all my blinds and not look out there tomorrow because it breaks my heart not to feed them...But I know we have to do it this way.
I will post tomorrow night

Catch A Kittie contest results for today....
Humans-4 Kitties-0!!!!
We caught Stashy first (He is a very, very skittish male the black one with sad, sad eyes and he only comes by a few times a week) and then Feets & JJ within minutes of each other and then.....
FOOTY!!!! We caught the little floozy baby maker!!! ;)
I can't believe we caught her because aside from Junior (A male and Feets & JJ's dad) and Yoda who I never ever see chase any of the females everyone in the colony if or will shortly be fixed!!!! And at least all of the females are or will be!!!
Don't get me wrong I love them all but we're up to 10 now to be honest it is getting very, very expensive (Yes I feed them canned food too because I made my little Tigga a promise that I would look out for her family and as long as I have food to eat so will they and with G*d's help that will be for a long, long time!!). And besides it's tough for little kittens to get by in the "wild" so now we'll only have the ones we have.

Bill
PS Now if I could ask everyone to keep good thoughts so that they make it through the procedures fine and thanks!

OMG what absolutely fantastic news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :highfive:
I bet you feel tons better knowing that all of your ferals will be fixed! I know what you mean when you say it is getting pricey. Canned food is not cheap but our wild kids deserve the best that we can feed them!

I will , keep my :fingerscr, and send all the :goodvibes: I can that all the surgeries will go well!

Are you going to be releasing them back in your area or are you going to try to adopt the little ones?

August 4th, 2008, 07:18 AM
I got a call last night that all are doing fine and it just so happened that they were brought to a special Spay/Neuter day by the volunteer so they were all fixed, de-wormed, ears cleaned (though none had mites thankfully), de-flead and the little ones were given fluids. I apparently had the sex wrong JJ is a girl and Feets is a boy but I never would have thought it because Feets is such a chicken!! Oh and Footy was pregnant again so it will be about 4-5 days while the woman holds her. But the main thing is all is well with them!!!
JJ & Feets are about 3-4 months old and I will try to adopt them out but that depends on what Ellen (The WONDERFUL rescue woman tells me as far as can it be done since she is an expert with 14 rescued cats in her house!).
Thank you all for the good thoughts!!!

It's too bad the little floozy was pregnant again but now she can relax and enjoy her life. No more responsibilities!
Don't worry about getting the sex wrong. I've done that and I actually had the chance to check. Little bugger I had was hiding things for the first few months. :frustrated:
Kittens generally get adopted a lot quicker than older kitties. :fingerscr they can be.

Well Ellen brought back Stashy yesterday morning when I was out. She said he took off. She also said as I already knew that he was VERY, VERY afraid of everything and I am afraid that this event might make him even more afraid if that is possible. I know why we had to do it but I still feel bad that he is so afraid. Footy and her kitties Feets & JJ will be back probably Sunday because Footy was preggers again the woman holds her for at least 7 days....
What an amazing woman!!!!!
She also said the although the kittens are very afraid they are at least eating whereas Footy won't move off of the carrier (She keeps them in a big dog cage in her garage and inside that they have a carrier to hide in a some cat stuff to play with) and that also makes me feel bad.....
I know this sounds like a crazy question but when you fix a female (Especially one that is preggers) do they get depressed by it?????

Thanks one and all!!!!

I know this sounds like a crazy question but when you fix a female (Especially one that is preggers) do they get depressed by it?????

Being in a cage for a few days while they recover is not such a bad thing. They will forget about it and be back to themselves soon. I have my latest recruit in the catuary in a large dog crate with the carrier inside too. It is giving her security when she is overwhelmed by the other 15 watching her. I need to get her comfortable enough to live with them because I really don't think she would be adoptable.

As for being depressed by being fixed while they are pregnant..... I have never seen it or heard of it. I would think they would be relieved that they don't have that responsibility. You should see my feral Stormy. She is like a kitten again.

You must feel so good knowing there will be no more kitties from the little hussy. Watch her. I bet she will be acting like a kitten soon herself! :highfive: Good Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
