What do everybody think about this ffood? http://www.petacular.com/products/Go-Natural-Dog-8.html

Other ideas for food are welcome!! I need the help! Id like to say that i live in NFLD and i am 4 hours from st.johns. And there arent many places to buy dog food (except walmart and grocery stores ) so its hard to find good dog food. Im getting a yorkie and wnat the best food possible.

It looks pretty decent. The first two ingredients are named meats, and the first is a meal -- good. Rice is good, but they've split brown, white and rice bran, so there's probably more than the ingredients list suggests, and likely more rice than meat overall. Barley is also good, as are the fruits and veg.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=1087&cat=all gives this food a 5 out of 6.

I'm not a fan, although I did use it as training treats a few times. Too grainy and too low in protein for me. There's more carbs than anything else.
Also they use Vitamin K which is likely the synthetic version which is just wrong. http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione

Thanks lissa, i will be staying away from that food. Do you have any suggestions??

people here suggest Orijen, Canidae and Innova/EVO

though a word of warning, my malamute could NOT handle the red meat EVO, he had runny poop for weeks.

i switched to canidae which is chicken/turkey based, and he seems to be agreeing with it so far.

what about this food?

That food also has vitamine k (menadione)... If you have access to a Petsmart, probably the best food you can get is the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Formula or the By Nature Adult or By Nature Organics formula. While the protein is lower in the By Nature and mostly from grains, at least it doesn't have menadione!

Good luck in your search for a good dog food.

ETA - with regards to suggestions, my choice would be raw or homecooked... :)

Thanks again lissa! .. I want to feed raw. But it being my first puppy and all, im going to have my hands full as it is, so i think choosing a good quility food is best!

Did you check out Innova, or Wellness that I suggested to you in the other thread? They are both very good quality products that are available reasonably close to you. I would also recommend Orijen, but I don't think it's available on the east coast.

Wellness does have wet - it comes in pouches and then 3oz, 5.5oz and 12oz cans - approximately...:p

I didn't realize you had access to better foods than Petsmart... What else is available to you???

Lissa- Its pretty much just wellness and Innova.. And the cr@ppy commercial brands. I did see some other good foods in Pet City, they had great first ingrediants but then as i read down further i saw the vitamine k stuff, so that runined it... lol.. Thanks lissa, i wonder if they were just 'out' of wellness canned? I'll check it out again in a few days, hopefully they will have it! :fingerscr

Innova has excellent canned varieties as well... the Innova canned, and Evo which is grain-free. Natura is the company that produces it, and also distributes other lines like California Naturals. Chances are if they carry Innova, they carry other lines too. Did you check if they had canned?

Check this out....

http://www.petcurean.com/dealer_location.php

There seems to be many dealers for Petcurean in your province. Chances are pretty good that these guys also carry other good products. Go Natural is a good food, and has grain free varieties too. There may be more options than you think. Also, check this article out...

I keep this in my favourites and use it as a reference all the time. :thumbs up

Hopefully the cans will be there next time you go... It is also worth asking if they will special order foods for you - a lot of the smaller pet food stores do this quite often.

You could do a lot worse than Wellness or Innova.... although I'd still supplement these foods, if they are accessible to you then I think you have found 2 good foods to choose from!:D
