foot injury

May 2nd, 2008, 01:42 AM
Hi the other day I was woken by my puppy yelping "howling" over and over. I ran up the stairs and took her from the crate. she is a 5 month old dane. after a few minutes I took her outside where she started yelping a bit again so we took her to the vet straight away. the vet thought she may have had a broken toe or foot. the x-rays were negative so she said it was a deep bruise in the top of her foot.

she gave us a 5 day supply of Rimadyl 100. we were told to give it to her twice a day at meals. its only been 2 days but the medicine seems to be wearing off sooner each time and she starts the constant yelping up again. the vet said to try as much as possible to not let her be too active. so we walk her outside and right back in when she goes. we may call the vet in the morning to tell her she is still having problems.

I was wondering if this sounds usual and maybe we should wait a few days to call again and hope that stops? or call and update the vet?

She may have gotten her foot caught in the crate somewhere. If the vet said it's a bruise, and she's still crying, I would call him back. So much pain doesn't sound usual for just a bruise  .

And welcome to the forum stesan :) . Please come back with an update on how your pup is doing. When you can, post lots of photos, ok? We just love Danes :cloud9: .

that does seem a little extreme for a bruise. Just off the wall, have you checked all her paw nails? Her due claws?

You might have the vet check for something imbedded, as well. Often, it's hard to see small foreign objects on xrays, but they can hurt like the dickens in tender pads!

I hope your pup is better soon, stesan! :fingerscr :goodvibes:

And welcome to the board!

Welcome to :thumbs up

Did your vet rule out panosteitis? Although it affects the leg bones, it is quite common in large breed puppies. I also agree that your pup shouldn't be in that much pain with just a bruise so would call your vet again or get a second opinion.

Hugs for your little girl :grouphug: And, please do post some pics of her in the Photo Forum here when you're able to post attachments.

Good luck at the vet and keep us posted. :fingerscr :goodvibes:
