Hypoallergenic cat?

My neighbour and I were talking about cats today and she said that her daughter got a hypoallergenic cat. She said she couldn't remember the name of the breed but it was from Russia. Does anyone know about this breed of cat? I have a niece who would love to have a cat but she is allergic so my brother and sister-in-law have nixed the idea. Can you get this breed in Canada?

The Siberian Cat is said to be hypoallergenic. I believe there is a breeder of these beautiful and big cats in BC.

I remember reading somewhere that Bengal cats were hypoallergenic.. There's also a hairless breed of cats. Like Dr. Evil has from those Austin Powers movies..

Bengals are beautiful and extremely loving.

There are a few different hypoalergenic (or very close to it) cats. There are Balanise cats, Laperm cats, and Bengal cats. I don't know of any other hypoalergenic cats, but I'm sure someone else will. :)

I think that you are talking about Siberians

Siberian does not effect some allergy suffers as much or in some cases not at all. At this point in time NO OFFICIAL STUDY has been done; but many allergy suffers have had the joy of having a Siberian join their household. It is believed that the dander they produce is different or does not contain a protein that is being called Fel-D1 that the dander of other cats does contain. The Fel-D1 protein is what many people with allergies are allergic to; thus the Siberian dander may not cause the allergic reaction that those with allergies may experience with other cats.

Devon Rex..I believe this is the "hairless breed" of which you speak of....some do have hair. I love them..so warm and very endearing. Cuddler's too.

They do tend to allergie's ...sometimes.

Devon rex's are usually hairy - short curly hair but they tend not to shed.

Sphynx are a hairless breed.

You need to remember it is often the dander that people are allergic to though.
Some cats such as ragdolls birmans, balinese - people report less of an allergic tendency around them.

But you can't be certain without trying exposure.
