Geriatric kitty

I have a 15 year old female cat who has suddenly taken to defecating in the basement. Her litter box is in the basement and in the last couple of days she has pooped beside it once and then twice more in another room downstairs that is carpeted. She is in good health and hasn't done anything like this before. She eats a formula for mature cats that we get from our vet. Any ideas on why this behaviour is occurring?

Cats are funny little things sometimes. Maybe she was too tired/sore to bother getting in the box. Maybe you hadn't scooped it out to her expected standards at the time. maybe she was stressed about some change in the house, and decided to let you know. Maybe something hurt once when she went in the box, and now she's avoiding it. If you didn't change anything like location of the box, or type of litter, I'd try completing changing the litter, and washing the surrounding area with an enzyme cleaner.

Or maybe she's just getting old and a little senile??? Give her big hugs and love her anyhow :)
