I have a question, hopefully I posted it in the right thread. I have read somewhere to have a bell placed on the door handle so your dog can signal when they want outside. I was wondering if that is a good idea and if so, how you train your dog to do that, cause most puppies can't reach that high for awhile.

We have cowbell type bells hanging on a belt from the door. When I first started, I would ring the bell right before letting them out (while they were at the door). Not soon after, they were ringing it themselves. Funny how it's turned out that Penny is now the official bell-ringer...if another dog wants to go out, she rings the bell. If I don't hear it right away, she comes to nudge me hard and runs back to the door to ring it again. It's quite simple really. If your pup rings it just to play, or accidentally brushes by it (even with its tail), don't forget to open the door immediately. This way the sound of the bell will be associated with the door opening.
