Crunchy liver treats

i was wondering if anybody has any ideas for crunchy liver treats, i have been looking on the web for a bit, but was wondering if anybody had any recipes?

Do you mean a liver biscuit type thing?

I know quite a few people who just cut up liver and bake on a low heat for a couple of hours, or use a dehydrator, but maybe you're thinking of something different?

here is the recipe i used, i dont know yet if enzo likes them, they havent finished cooking yet, but from the licking he did of my hands it seems like he does like it....

Liver Dog Treats
1 pound raw liver (any kind) blended into a paste
1 egg
1cup flour
1/2 cup corn meal (or flour)
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon brewers yeast (adds a nutty flavour)

Mix well and bake at 350 for 1/2 hour for chewy treats, longer for crisper treats.

Is there a way to do this without a blender ? I don't have one :sad:

hey frenchy, sorry i responded so late...

hmm i cant really think of any other way to do it, i used a food processor, but an idea might be..if you up for it is to get the liver cut it in to big sqaure shapes ( try to use as much of the piece of liver to do that as you can and just cook up the excess) and cut realllllyyyyyy thin slices, that way they will turn out crunchy dont cook them for too long, you will have to keep an eye on it.

The recipe i used i didnt really like, it was more like liver bread than crunchy liver treats, but soo i think i will try a different one, i'll post it when i do.

we have a lady here who makes liver treats, "arful good", all it is is dehydrated beef liver, 100% natural, my dog loves them!! I use to just dry it myself but it took too long and stunk to high heaven *L* now I pay 8 dollars for 7 oz, I'm sure she does ship, its sold in specialty shops here, I've bought and mailed to dogs all over the world including africa *L* her email is if you want to email her, if you'd like to try it first, let me know, I'd gladly send you a package. pm me if you'd like

Ah, my dogs favorite treat! The local butcher thought we were crazy when we first walked in and ordered so much liver. I bake it slow, let it cool and break it into small pieces for treats. Kept frozen.

I use the dehydrator.......stinks to high heaven though *L*

1 lb. beef liver
2 large eggs (wash shells if you are going to include them)
1 cup fat free cottage cheese
1 1/2 cups wheat germ
3 cups wheat flour
tea each baking soda & powder

Additional flour for rolling
Tip: It is easier to cut liver (and other meats) while slightly frozen.
1. Preheat oven to 300 F
2. Rinse liver and cut into 1 inch pieces (see note above).
3. In a 2 quart sauce pan bring liver and one cup of water to a boil over high heat.
4. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer until liver is no longer pink. Approximately 5 minutes.
5. Reserve cooking liquid.
6. In a blender or food processor puree the liver and eggs (if you are going to include the egg shells, now is the time to do so).
7. Add reserved cooking liquid, as needed, to assist the puree process and keep the ingredients moving.
8. Spoon liver mixture into a bowl.
9. Stir in the cottage cheese, wheat germ, flour and any remaining cooking liquid.
10. Knead dough until it no longer feels sticky.
11. Roll out into 1/2" thickness and cut with dog cookie cutters.
12. Place on a greased cookie sheet.
13. Another option: Drop a tablespoon of dough onto a greased cookie sheet. Slightly flatted the ball with a fork to make a dog cookie.
14. Bake for one hour.
15. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog.
Once the liver dog treats are cooled, they should not leave a residue when touched. If they do, bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until completely hard and no residue remains.

When I bake the liver for treats...I do it in the smell inside..hope it warms up soon!
