My dog just got spayed

I am new to this forum. Glad to find this place to ask questions about pets.

My 6-month-old golden retriever just got spayed yesterday. Now she is home wearing a cone. The vet said the suture will be removed in 10 days and she shoud be wearing the cone all the 10 days. My question to you is: Do I have to keep the cone on her all the time? She seems to be miserable in it - she doesn't know what to do and very confused.

I would only keep it on her when you can't watch to make sure she isn't licking or biting at the sutures.

Some dogs don't bother at all with their incision. I didn't use a cone when mine was spayed and she barely touched it. I would try her without it, as long as you can monitor her and correct her if she does start messing with the incision. The cone itself can be traumatizing and uncomfortable for many dogs, and I'm sure she is experiencing enough of both of these things already.

I agree, you can take it off and monitor. The cone is a extra safety precaution. Also FYI - days 2-5 are the most itchy post operatively.:pawprint:

Thank you all....I took your advice - only leave it on when I can't watch her, like when she is in her crate. she is okay with the collar so far, not crazy aobut it of course, LOL:crazy:......However, I found a new problem, she starts to use her rare leg to scratch her wound....I am not sure if she can really touch it but it certainly looks scary....Is there any way that I can do about it?

What a little monkey :crazy: ....you could try putting a sock on her rear leg. :shrug:
