It is an inspiration for lazy people everywhere - and, perhaps, another reason why dogs don't need masters.

Because an American inventor has finally created a machine that means our four-legged friends can play fetch by themselves.

A video posted on YouTube by the 44-year-old, who is not named, shows his Dachshund Jerry happily entertained by the tennis ball launcher.

Each time the bouncing projectile is fired the sausage dog enthusiastically races off to collect it and then returns it to the device... and repeats the process again and again.

And it wasn't just Jerry who was happy - as seen by the young boy who joined him, the launcher can keep all your dependants occupied for hours.

Nice machine but it won't work for my dog. I need one with wheels and will chase the dog after it shoots the ball. Every time he fetches the ball, he'd tease me with it and hoping I will give chase. I always maintain that the breeder should refund half of my money b/c I only got half a retriever.
