Cat wont clean his bottom!! Help!!

March 19th, 2008, 04:35 PM
Hi all--

My Panda is now not cleaning his bottom anymore. He is a big boy at 17lbs and Im afraid the reason for not cleaning it is his weight. Im in the process of getting his weight down and hopeful that will help the situation.

I have been using the unscented baby wipes but they arent cuttin it anymore. Im thinking Ill try to shave him down there and clean it with warm soapy water and a washcloth. I imagine its uncomfortable for him plus he is leaving little brown circles all over my furniture:(

Any suggestions other than what Ive mentioned?? Im kinda at a loss here so any words would be highly appreciated.

its possible its a weight problem, but unless the cat has put on tons of weight lately, i would say its just down right laziness. there isn't anything you can do to encourage your cat to clean its bottom. all you can do is like you said, shave it and keep it clean. you may need to have the cat anesthetized to have it shaved if it wont let you shave it yourself. otherwise, there isnt much else you can do. good luck! :D

While being overweight is a cause of not cleaning the back end. This lack of grooming can occasionally be a sign of underlying illness. It may be worth to have just a quick physical from your veterinarian if Panda hasn't seen his vet lately. If he is 7 or older, than routine/yearly blood testing may also make sure that he is as healthy on the inside as he looks on the outside.

In the meantime, taking him to a groomer may also help. They can shave and clean him up and give you some options for continued maintenance. You can also purchase inexpensive shavers at most stores. Pet stores also have pet version baby wipes, but I know many owners that use just standard baby wipes and have had no problems.

Hope that helps. Good luck. :pawprint:
