Walking . . . . coneless

Below, some highway walking on the weekend with Abby. This is Highway 40, west of Longview, Alberta and closed through to June 15, for the winter, at Cataract Creek. This is our favourite southern access road into Kananaskis Country, a modern road that has little traffic and quite handy from our house.

Below, Abby and Keeper play "Catch The Gentleman!!!" A few people were out walking besides ourselves. The fellow ahead has skis attached to his pack and he skiied back through the valley below. One week after this highway opens in June, I'll be running through here on a relay team in the Kananaskis 100 (miles), a race that attracted 140 teams last year, starting at Longview and finishing at Nakiska, which was the site of the alpine events in the 88 Olympics.

Abby and Keeper meet a new friend on this wind swept place . . . a mostly Golden retriever kind of thing belonging to the rider in the background.

Below, Keeper is glad to be rid of her cone and stitches . . . . every day is now a sunny one!!

Below, Keeper follows the shadows.

Below, Polly stares forlornly at the door handle!!! Carol was sitting in the chair in the background a few mornings ago, before sun-up, looking towards Idaho when the fireball you read about and maybe saw on the news came streaking into view.

Below, Keeper at home, without a cone:

Below, the snowdrifts of life can't hold Keeper back

Below, from a few weeks ago, Abby and Keeper, still in a cone, have spotted a coyote in the valley, accompanied by lots of howling, and are suitably outraged.

Silouhette cone!!!

We're hoping for some big adventures this weekend after not being too active the last few weeks. The snow has been a little deep in some of our favourite haunts.

Indian Graves is south of Longview, exiting the highway just a shade north of Chain Lakes and heading west. About 20 minutes south of Longview. It's also in K-Country.

The highway above is an exit right at Longview, heading west then south, then west, then north through Eyrie Gap into K-Country .

We were there last weekend . . . . snow too deep to do much walking around. But we go up the Petro Canada road to the summit and do some ridge walking there. Looks like this, looking back towards Indian Graves:

You'd be doing your off-roading probably in the valley below.

In the summer, you can keep going up and over the hump and eventually come out at Cataract Creek again, right where the walk in the first pictures begins.
