Mineral oil is petroleum-based and is not recommended. Have you tried pumpkin (not the pie filling, pure pumpkin, available in a can)? Also, try giving him only canned food, which is better for urinary health and might help his constipation as well.

Mineral oil used to be thought OK, I've even seen it given to children, but when you think it's petroleum-based, it can't be healthy to drink that stuff. Pumpkin is gentler and works for both constipation and diarrhea. Your only challenge is to get your cat to eat it. Some of them like the taste, some don't, in which case try mixing a tablespoon into really smelly food.

If he doesn't like the pumpkin you can try slippery elm bark.
